SEPT. 23,1915, Our Public Schools. Our county schools are opening up again for business, a business that every citizen in the county should stand loyally by and lend a helping * 1 *- - /^AUaaIO i oro thp { Instead of criticising and kn ocking and disrupting this great social and commercial "business" commonly known as our public schools, let everyone exert his or her individual efforts to its advancement and expansion. The public school is one of our greatest constructive agencies, and without its aid and assistance in creating and cultivating the intellect of our young people this'community would soon be sinking to the ancient plane of ignorance and superstition. There is nothing to be gained by jeopardizing the work and influence of our public school system, but; there is everything to; gain by fostering and encouraging and extending it a helping hand. Education is a vital necessitvofl the day, and its effects are felt in j every walk of life. Without it, aj young, person enters upon the serious problems of life handicapped in a | thousand different ways. J We of the community are personally interested in the welfare of the community, and there is no way in which we can better serve our individual and collective interests than by standing loyally behind our public schools. They need our good will and encouragement?not only need them, but should have them. The Weather. For several days prior to Tuesday the weather was very hot and oppressive in this locality. It did not seem like the real old southland summer time nor was it like our usual September weather. Rc-ally, * it struck us as oeing 01 a umcicm brand from anything we have experienced in this country or in our peregrinations around this little old world. To us the climax came Tuesday afternoon when we saw in a moment of retrospect a thinly clad Arab lounging in front of his little tent on the sun baked desert of Egypt and we violated a commandment by coveting his placid ease and indifference. About midnight, or perhaps a little earlier, however, a northeast wind sprang up and be-1 fore morning extra covering was necessary to bodily comfort. Wednesday the weather continued cool and fires were lighted in many instances. We hope, and there is a reason for so doing, that the gulf breezes have caught this old hot wave and yanked it around the horn and anchored it in Magdalena bay to deal with the Mexican greasers.
