Billboards Are Hit. A special commission appointed by the late Mayor Gaynor of New York jives the result of a studious investigation of billboard advertising, saying: "There is serious doubt as to whether billboard advertising is as profitable to the merchant advertiser is other forms of advertising." The mmrnission bases this conclusion on the testimony of merchants who know 'rom their ^xperlenoe. One mer;nant said that the business he is en?a?ed in must rely unon the newsna iers for any great success in advertisng. and another said that thei'e is lothing to take the place of the newsjapers. The commission has found hat many a business man has found n hi3 business that the profitable advertising is not that on billboards noiced now and then, not the advertisng that is done in dodgers and circuars and papers of unknown circula- ' ion and influence, but the advertisng that is inserted in the columns of eputable papers in which the people . iave confldfience. The newspapers go nto the homes and there they tell the 1 lews and talk business for the adver- f isers.
