In a land of distrust like Russia it is only natural that the precautions taken should be of the most drastic order, hence the use of the royal understudy who has always been a conspicuous ligure at that court. Indeed, it was the understudy of the late Czar Alexander 111 ?a man named ivomarofl"?who was murdered in Moscow some years ago, when the murderer thought 1^' had covered himself with glory bv assassinating the czar. Nicholas, like his father before him, has an understudy, and the many state functions he is supposed to have attended -at the opening of his reign, when the relations with his people were more strained than they are today, really were attended for the most part by proxy. Xo monarch, however, made such frequent use of his understudy as the late Emperor William of Germany. Every day as the clock struck twelve the emperor came out and bowed on the palace balcony. It was not until some time after the emperor's demise that the secret was made known that the man who appeared daily on the balcony was the royal understudy. And the person who gave the secret away was the great Bismarck. WAR HAS SPARED CARUSO Famous Tenor So Far Exempt, but Always at the Service of Hie Country. Caruso's apartment in his Xew York hotel was filled with flowers on the night of his return from abroad, lie seemed glad to be back. He was proud that he had spent 35 days in the Italian army. GERMAN WARSHIPS ACTIVE. Strike English Coast Without Warning?Damage to Property. London, December J 6:? For the first time in centuries England has been struck by a foreign foe. A squadron of swift German cruisers crept through the fog last night to the eastern coast and turned their guns against the Britons. When day broke they began bombardment of three important towns ?Hartlepool, at the mouth of the Tees; Whitby,thirty-five miles southward, and Scarborough, noted as a pleasure resort,fifteen miles beyond. Hartlepool suffered worst. There two battle cruisers and an armored I ' cruiser were engaged. The British j war office fixes the number of dead at Hartlepool as seven soldiers and twenty-two civilians and the wounded at fourteen soldiers and fifty civilians. At Scarborough, shelled by a battle cruiser and an armored cruiser, thirteen casualties are reported, while at Whitby two were killed and two wounded. Men, women and children of the civilian population were left dead or wounded, struck without warning while at work. In all the casualty list totals 110, according to the official estimates, of whom thirty-one are known to be dead. The Balmoral hotel at Scarborough received the full effects of a shell. A number 1 of houses and shops were shattered and partly burned in each of the towns. The hostile squadron escaped in the mist after an encounter with coast guard vessels. Display Windows. One of the most attractive show windows we have ever seen in a store of it's kind is that of the Kingstree Hardware Company. It is especially beautiful at night under the soft rays of an electric light with a red shade. The display embraces cut glass, carving sets, hand t j ?? some cmnaware auu iuau> umci useful and attractive articles suggestive of the great gift season, and is another example of the artistic touch of "Uncle" Joe Alsbrook. The Kingstree Dry Goods Co have two attractively arranged display windows. One is devoted to toys and Christmas trinkets for the little folk, while the other is fitted out with gents' furnishings. Both are ' decorated with holly. Britton & Hutson's show windows 1 have a special charm for Main street pedestrians. They are full of choice , edibles and fairly make one's mouth water for a taste of the good things 1 there on display. Jacobs & Scott's windows present a holiday aspect with an exceptionally nice lot of Christmas dainties, and it goes without saying, that they're fit for the kings to dine upon when it comes to quality, for "Montie" believes in pure food and plenty of it. The large show windows of the People's Mercantile Co are attractively arranged for the holiday season and present a splendid array of the goods carried in their big store. Messrs Jenkinson Bros Co have put their big store in holiday attire and have two handsomely arranged SKAUJ winrinwB ( The windows of our jewelry stores need not be commented upon here, since they have everything to make a beautiful display with.
