Lake City, December 15:?Mrs M I E Hanna was hostess Wednesday afternoon of last week to the members of the Book club, and in her usual delightful manner gave her guests a most enjoyable afternoon's entertainment. Monday the committee on entertainment of the Home and School 1 association assembled at the home of 1 Mrs J M Sturgeon for the purpose of a discussing an entertainment to be ^ given by the club at an early date. Mr and Mrs H N Graham are spending today in town with friends. Mr and Mrs John Epps of Cades ' visited relatives in town today. < Mrs H G Woods of Anderson is I the puest of her wisters at this place. Mrs Sydney Sutcliffe of Newark, New Jersey, came down this week to ; spend the Christmas holidays with ; her husband's relatives at this place ' and is now at the home of Mrs J M Truluck. Mrs Sutcliffe is a charming ; young matron and many social at- ' f tentions are usually given in her ' honor on the occasions of her visits J here. Mrs A A Brown spent Friday and Saturday at Florence, the guest of a ( relative, Mr?Lawrence. * Mr J S McClam, with a corps of assistants, was host to a party of 1 young ladies chaperoned by Mrs W George C Haselton, on a "'possum . * hunt" Wednesday evening. Mrs J L Richardson was the charming hostess for the December meeting of the ''Kill Kare Klub". This meeting was held Friday afternoon, the 11th inst. The club members and invited guests assembled promptly at 3:30 and were received I by the hostess,assisted by Mesdames Delia and J Hoyt Carter. The meeting was called to order and the minutes of the last meeting read and approved. As there were no business matters requiring attention,the meeting was turned over to the hostess. The ever fascinating game of "hearts" was pfayed, after which a delightful salad course and coffee was served by the hostess, assisted by Miss Ethel Hair. Never has this community been I more saddened than last Tuesday night, when it learned of the death - . . , , of Mrs Edith M Jennings,tne oeiovea | wife of Mr John Slater Jennings, j which occurred about 8:40 o'clock. She had been ill with a complication j of diseases since November 26, and the utmost efforts of physicians, nurses and devoted relatives and friends were vain. Mrs Jennings was the youngest child of Mrs Mary E Gale and the late Mr John C Gale of Easton, Md, i in which town she was born 34 years i ago. In early life she moved to i South Carolina and for a number of ' years,in partnership with her sister. Miss Hannah Gale (now Mrs R C Douglass), conducted a flourishing millinery business successively at Bamberg, Sumter and Kingstree. She was married to Mr Jennings in the Episcopal church of the Holy Comforter. Sumter, April 29, 1907. Two interesting little daughters i were born of this union, Elizabeth : and Edith, aged respectively about 5 < and 3 years. She is survived by her < husband, children, mother and the i following sisters: Mesdames S L 1 Brown, of St Augustine, Fla; R C < Douglass, of Citra, Fla; W S Grace, < Jr, and William Reddie, of Easton, 1 Md; also one brother, Mr John C Dale, likewise of Easton, Md. 1 j Mrs Jennings was a lady of ster- 1 ing worth, and her never-failing l :ourtesy and kindliness won and held < for her a multitude of friends wher- 1 ?ver she was known. The deepest sympathy for the Strieker family is J felt by all. 1 Mrs Jennings' remains were taken i jO Easton, Md, yesterday evening] J rod will be interred in the cemetery i )f that town, where sleep the bodies < )f her father, her brother, Mr Sam- < ael Gale, and her sister, Mrs F J Henry. Scranton, December 15:?Miss Bessie Peters and Mr C Nash Parrott were happily married last Thursday j in the city of Charleston. Mrs Par-, rott is a charming young lady of \ Charleston. Mr Parrott is an in- i dustrious farmer of the Cowards section. They have a host of friends who extend their best wishes. i Mr and Mrs Parrott were the quests jf the former's brother, Captain J L F Parrott, two days this week. The Scranton Literary society of the school held its weekly meeting ast Friday. Besides the usual programme of readings, piano and vo:al solos, essays and declamations, the query for debate was discussed: 'Resolved, That Artificial Beauty Is More Attractive Than Natural Beauty." Scranton, December 14:?At the annual meeting of tHfe Pee Dee Medical association held at-Florence last Wednesday, Decembe* 9, papers were read, including one by Dr W S Lynch, his subject being: "A Plea For Better County Medical Societies.'' Dr Lynch was elected president of the Florence County Medical society. At the last regular meeting of Scranton Lodge No* 114, K of P.the following officers were elected to serve the ensuing term: J M Myers, C C; A A Cook, Vice C C; S J Kirby, P; W M Jordan, M of F and E; N M Graham, K of R and S; A Graham, M of W; John Tilton, M of A; W P Kirby. I G; E J Kirby, 0 G; W L Jones, Trustee. The lodge has joined the "buy-a-bale-of-cotton movement." Miss Allene Godwin, a daughter of Mr Samuel Godwin of the High Hill section, and Mr Edgar Haselden were married at Florence last Wednesday night by Rev W C Blount. Miss Godwin was a popular and efficient teacher in the graded school at Lexington. Mr Haselden is a progressive farmer. Their many friends wish them a happy married life. Mr W B McCants, a well known timber buyer for the ACL Corporation at Georgetown,passed through town Saturday. The Young People's Branch of the W C T U enjoyed its first social of the winter season last Friday night at the hospitable home of Mrs R B Cannon. The social consisted of the members of the Branch and a large number of invited guests. Amusing games, an exciting contest and an old-time "candy pulling" were enjoyed. Miss Irene Creecy won the prize?a box of stationery ?in the contest. A most pleasant evening was spent by all present, as is always the case at Mrs Cannon's home. IMG. Bazaar aud Box Supper.
