Special to The County Record. Lake City, October 13:?Mr T J Cottingham, cashier of The Farmers & Merchants Bank of this city, left Sunday evening for Richmond, v a, where he will attend the convention of American Bankers. ^ Miss Lide Kennedy and Mr L D fl Rodgers of Kingstree were visitors in town Sunday. Mr and Mrs J Hoyt Carter of Cades spent Sunday here with their mother, Mrs Delia D Carter. Mrs Frana Cannon of Scranton was the guest of her sister, Mrs W E Carter, Sunday. Her nephew, Mr Clyde Carter, who was critically ill Sunday, is greatly improved at LUIS L1UJC. Mr E D Sallenger of Florence vis^ ited at the home of his wife's parents, Dr and Mrs A H Williams, Sunday. Miss G!a Eaddy, who was suddenly stricken with appendicitis, was taken to Charleston Friday morning, and with skilled attention she is rapidly recovering her usual good health. Mr James Easel den of Cades was in town this week-end, having been called here on account of the illness L of his sister, Miss Ola Eaddy. Mrs W E Sturgeon was called to ^^her home in North Carolina, on ac' count of the critical illness of her mother, who expired before any of her three daughters, Mrs Robert Matthews of Cades, Mrs W E Sturgeon, of r.his place, or Mrs Eva k Graham of Scranton, could reach her I bedside. The bereaved ones have | the sympathy of their many friends i at this nlace in this great grief. k The dwelling on the "Constine W place," just two miles below Lake City, belonging to Dr A H Williams, was destroyed by fire Saturday "^""rooming, which was caused by a defective flue. This is the fourth house to be burned within the last two weeks within a radius of five miles of Lake City. Miss Madeline Sauls, one of Cades' most charming young ladies, was in town yesterday morning on a shopping expedition. A large crowd of folk from here went to Florence last evening, some in autos, others on the train, to enjoy "Mutt and which was played in the opera house at that place. Miss Dora Hinnant has again taK- ( en charge of the Gaskins school, ; school district No 50, and is looking , forward to moving into the new school-house being erected there, when she will have one or more as( sistants. , Much interest is being manifested , here in the conflict between the I warring European nations, but "Uncle" Frank, a one time slave, , and veteran of the war between the States, is more concerned than most . of us; especially so, since a certain . young lady informed him that the supply of coffee?coffee being his , greatest weakness?would become , exhausted owing to the fact that ( "all of the vessels had been captur- , ed bv the several countries at war." Through Mrs J P Epps, a most lovable and sincere lady of Cades, , ... , w *-* _ i j ? _| and Mr Julius Aicraaaen.aisu ui umc; ( place, purses and contributions of clothing and food have recently been j gotten up at Lake City for the relief of the family of Mr Poston, now , suffering from the ravages of a , fearful malady. Among the most catchy show windows that we have ever seen in Kingstree are those of the Kingstree Hardware Co. One of these windows s arranged to advertise ammunition and guns. The window is long and is arranged to represent a real old j field hunting scene. In the center of the field is an artificial pond, made Df a looking glass on which are several paper ducks. The huntsman is there with his dog. which is in the act of pointing or setting a covey )f partridges that are scattered about in the grass and pine-straw. The north window of this handsome lew store is arranged to advertise paints and brushes and is scarcely ess attractive in general arrange-! nent than the hunting scene. Adjoining the Kingstree Hardware Co is the large new store of the People's Mercantile Co, the popular purveyors to a large patronage. In one of its big show windows is attractively displayed a full line of seasonable groceries, while in the ithpr is to be noted an artistic dis play of dry goods, shoos, notions and furnishings. The show windows of Mr S Marcus, the Kingstree Dry Goods Co and Jenkinson Bros Co are also most attractively decorated with shoes, stylish coat suits, dress goods and other seasonable merchandise. The windows of our two jewelry 3tores, Messrs T E Baggett and F J Watts, are as pretty as one could expect to find in much larger towns. Their wares embrace all of the latest designs in gold and silver ornaments, watches, cut glass, fine china and silverware. These, of course, are in a class by themselves when it comes to making a handsome window display. ! Messrs Davis & Fennell are by no means in the background when it comes to pretty window displays. Brother Davis is an old hand at the "? ' 1- -1-? 1 !i. business ana is noi iacKing wnen it comes to good taste in arranging an attractive shoe or clothing display, though he is somewhat handicapped by the size of his windows. Our friend, Mr Harry Riff, is also showing some pretty things in his show windows, one being devoted to the display of ladies' frocks and fabrics, while the other is given up to shoes and gents' furnishings.
