I Will Ask Federal Aid?Resolution Adopted. Florence, August 4:?The largest f. meeting of representatives of tobac| co interests in. a long while was held tonighi: to discuss the situation | broughi about by the war in Europe. Bankers of the Pee Dee section held a meeting to devise plans and f will probably send a committee to | Washington to seek aid for the tof bacco growers. ? A resolution was passed by the Tobacco Warehouse association as follows: % "That it is decided to keep open the warehouses for the sale of leaf tobacco. That, owing to the war clouds hanging over Europe and sev% eral countries being already involved in war, several of which countries are Jarge users of South Carolina tobacco,it has in a measure affected prices and some of the large firms | have withdrawn from the markets, | yet several large concerns are still I buying tobacco and we hoDe that the worst may be over in a short I time, though it is impossible to forecast the future. It is not advisable for this committee to make any | further suggestions, except that it is best not to rush the tobacco on the market." J . . ' - : j... _ i- . 5 IN ST< ]arolinas. BURGLARISE THREE STORES SUNDAY NIGHT-FOUR SUSPECTS ARRESTED. Burglars entered three stores here some time during Sunday night or early Monday. The stores entered ; were the Kingstree Hardware Company's, on Hampton avenue; Joseph IZahran's fruit and grocery, and ; Harry Rift's dry goods and clothing store on Academy street, all located j in the central part of town in the i main business blocks. The Hard| ware Company's place was entered through a rear transom, while the f other two were entered through rear windows, the thief or thieves breaking the glass of the upper sash : so as to release the fasteners; this done, they merely had to raise the lower sash and step in. In each store the cash drawers were rifled of what little change had been left there when the proprietors closed their stores Satur day night. In addition to the cash, cutlery, air rifles and gun cartridges were taken from the hardware j store; cigars and canned goods from | Zahran's and clothing from Riff's. From the nature of the depredations it was believed that the thieves were mere youths and novices at the business. Chief of Police Epps has been on a systematic hunt for the thieves ever since Monday morning, and on Tuesday afternoon he "bagged his igame", Bill Pitts, Gus Kennedy, ! Johnnie Batiste and Willie Burgess, j four negro boys about 14 or 15 years of age. They had gone out in the suburbs to try the r'fles and ammunition they had stolen from the Kingstree Hardware Co.
