The farmers have surely been blessed with ideal seasons so far this year and crops of all kinds are said to be just booming. Mr C H Snider and wife and daughter of Conway visited the tormer's parents, Dr and Mrs A M Snider, here this week. Mrs R C McCabe and little son. R C MeCabe, Jr, are visiting the family of Dr McCabe's sister, Mrs Mildred Duval, at Cheraw. Miss Carrie Lee Lipps, the popular milliner for Mrs S Marcus during 4 the past season, returned to her home at Wise, Va, yesterday. Monday evening Miss Eunice Nettles, who has been critically ill for some weeks past,was taken to an infirmary at Columbia for treatment. Rev J H Snider of Spartanburg and Mrs C 0 Thompson of Charleston spent several days this week with their parents, Dr and Mrs A M Snider. We are pleased to learn that Mr S Marcus has been much benefited by his visit to the Adirondack mounlain? of New York and is expected home tomorrow. Saturday being the "glorious Fourth," the postoffice will observe only Sunday hours. The mad that arrives on train No 89 will not be opened that night. Candidates are announced for all the vacant county offices,we believe, except that of Auditor. Looks kind of strange that this fat office should so far go begging. Owing to a hitch in the official \ documents connected with the disN pensary management, that institution was not opened until Monday. It was expected to open Friday last. Misses Hattie Mayes and Zeline Anderson of Florence, Pauline Watson, Latta; Emma Cooper, Indiantown, and Sallie Hamilton, Dillon, are guests of Miss Jimmie Britton. In the absence of the pastor, Rev Thornton Whaling, D D,LL D, president of Columbia Theological seminary, will conduct the morning and evening services at the Presbyterian church next Sabbath. Jailor W J Cockfield brought to j our office yesterday a magnificent' specimen of a cotton blossom that was j taken at random from his three-acre I field a short distance south-west of \ town. From the same land Mr Cockfield shipped 190 crates of beans, and the cotton, which is now waistJ high and filled with buds and blos! soms.was not planted until the beans were out of the way. He says he cleared enongh money on the beans to cover all the expenses incident to the cotton crop. The editorin-chief is Miss Margaret Graham of Gourdins and the annual is one of the handsomest we have seen. It is profusely illustrated with half-tone plates and pen engravings and contains much interesting reading matter. The volume is attractively printed, bound in brown leather and l gold. Besides Miss Margaret Gra ham a number of other young ladies from Williamsburg, among whom are Misses Irene Epps, Aggie Boyd, j Emma Ferrell. Hazel, Dora and May Graham, Cornelia Odom, Frankie Cook, Josio Bartell, Martha and Isla Gamble, Maude Wilson and Aimer 1 Barentine, constitute the "W 'iamsburg County Club." Hon. Edwin Harper Dead. In the death of Hon Edwin Harper, which occurred at his home here about 11 o'clock Saturday morning, another of the pioneer citizens of Kingstree and Williamsburg county has passed away. Mr Harper was born at Wilson, N C, February 8, 1845, and came to this county early in life where he joined his brother, Mr James Harper, who had preceded him here. At the outbreak of the war he 'joined the Confederate army and served throughout the war, for a time serving as one of General Lee's couriers. * tifat* \A f Wornnr aorlu LUC VVOl lilt liai(n.i, tunj in the seventies, engaged in a mercantile business in Kingstree which he conducted on the site now occupied by the Gourdin building, j the home of The County Record. Several years later he went to the lower part of the county, where he was successful in the turpentine business, and there married Miss Sarah Davidson, youngest daughter of the late Mr Robt J Davidson of Georgetown, who, with twelve grown-up children, survives him. The children are: Messrs Fred W, S Paul, Walter, Thomas, Cuyler, Edwin, Jr, Misses Mabel, Floride, Belle, Eunice, Bessie and Mrs B G Land of Greelyville. Mr Harper was a Representative to the State Legislature from this county for four years. He was a good business man, honest and upright in all of his dealings. His religion was the Baptist faith, and at Harpers, where he lived and acquired a vast area of land, he alone built, equipped and defrayed the pastoral expenses of a church for many years. In the early nineties Mr Harper, with his family, again removed to Kingstree, where he has since resided. Ill health, in the form of a 1?*-?i ?? StrOKe 01 paralysis, ien upuu Willi in 1908, and from that time hence he has been almost a helpless invalid. During his last illness his entire family was with him, ana nothing that the hands of a loving, patient wife,devoted daughters or affectionate sons could do to prolong life or remove the sting of death was spared. Ten days or two weeks prior to his demise Mr Harper's remarkable constitution gave way and he gradually grew worse until the summons came. Funeral services, conducted by Rev W E Hurt, were held at the home of the deceased at 5 p. m. Sunday and interment made in the Williamsburg cemetery, in the presence of a large gathering.
