The fountain in the playground in North Kingstree is now in operation, exciting the admiration of all. Mrs C E Funk of St Stephens spent several days this week with her parents,Mr and Mrs H A Miller. Mrs P S Courtney and three children, Mary Louise, Louis Spurgeon and the baby, spent the week-end with relatives at Florence. Mr Lawrence Swails was summoned to Hamlet yesterday afternoon on account of the illness of his brother, Mr Morgan Swails. Misses Carrie Scott and Rebecca Nettles, Mrs W G Gamble and Mrs M F Heller made a flying trip to Manning Friday in Mr Heller's car. Misses Amanda Edwards and Mamie McLees attended the school fair and demonstration exercises at Union High school, Rome, Wednesday. Mrs W I Nexsen and little son, W I, Jr, have gore to Asheville, N C.to spend the summer. Mr Nexsen preceded them there about ten days k ago. \Mr WE Nesmith, who has been in a hospital at Charleston for several days past for the purpose 01 undergoing an operation, has returned home. Miss Claudine King was "at home" to her little class-mates and friends Monday,4 to 6 p. m., the occasion being the celebration of her eighth birth-day. The many friends of Miss Eunice Nettles, whose illness has been noted in these columns from time to time, will be gratified to learn that she is still improving. Mr and Mrs W P Young and little son.W P, Jr, who have been visiting Mrs Young's parents, Mr and Mrs Louis Stackley, returned to their home at Florence Monday. We acknowledge with thanks an invitation to the commencement exercises of the 129th year of the College of Charleston, Charleston, to be held Tuesday evening, May 19. Mr J L S Coker of Darlington stopped over in Kingstree Thursday of last week while en route to Zeb, V where he will spend some time with his sister, Mrs Willie T Phillips. Mr Boyd Thomas returned yesterday from a visit to his father, Mr Maxie Thomas, who is in an infirmary at Florence. He reports his father doing as well as could be expected. The first shipment of beans from Kingstree this season was made by Mr Fred Harper Monday. The ! shipment netted him $5.00 per crate. ' * ? In this issue, C ESt Amand, Esq, who has been for some months associated with the law firm of LeRoy Lee, Esq, announces that he has opened offices in theHirsch building for the general practice of law. Mrs W B Gregg of Florence stopped over in Kingstree last week to visit her parents, Mr and Mrs W#P McGill. Mrs Gregg was on her way to visit her sister. Mrs D E Bradham, at Newberry, Fla, and her brother,Mr W P McGill, Jr, at Trenton, Fla. The high school baseball teams of Kingstree and Greely ville played one of the most closely contested games of the season on thelatter's grounds Friday afternoon. Eleven innings were required to finish the game, which resulted in a score of 4 to 3 in favor of Greelyville. Last week the Kingstree Electric Light and Ice company purchased a pair of fine mules for use in the delivery of ice this summer. One of the mules died a few hours after reaching here, having been driven over from Sumter. The company will replace him in time for the ice season. We are indebted to the courtesy of Misses Mary and Margaret Graham, of this county.for an invitation to the commencement exercises of Chicora College, Greenville, which will take plac May 15-19. Both of these young indies are members of the graduating class, which includes twenty-six members. Thursdav of last week Mr T D Gamble of Black River presented us with a fine string of beautiful bream and red-breast fresh from the Wee Nee. It was the prettiest string of fish we have seen in a long time and to say that we are sincerely grateful to our friend but feebly expresses our grateful appreciation of his thoughtful kindness. The faculty and graduating class of the Tomlinson graded school, colored, have issued attractive invitations to their sixth annual commencement exercises which will j take place at Mt Zion M E church, May 15 to 18. There are seven to be graduated, viz: Ella Cockfield. Annie General, Iva Hanna, Selma E Fulton, Silva Little, Annie A Strong and Ruth I Salters. We were mighty pleasantly surprised early yesterday morning when on responding to a Knock at the door our kind and thoughtful friend, "Poor Conrad", handed us a mess of fish for breakfast. They were fine and fresh, just out of the water, in fact, and still fluttering. Talk about your mountain rainbow trout, we will put Black river perch, bream and red-breast against them any time and give odds on the decision of an impartial epicure. The faculty and graduating class of the Kingstree High school are sending out invitations to .heir commencement exercises to be held May 22-25. Dr L A Riser and Mr E W Eeeples of Columbia are in Kingstree this week making arrangements for the inauguration of an extensive campaign in the interest of the health and sanitary condition of Williamsburg county under the direction of the State board of health. There will be established stations at Kingstrec, Gourdin, Greelyville, Nesmith and Hemingway, for the observation and treatment of such diseases and unsanitary conditions as may be brought to the attention of these gentlemen. They will be in the county five weeks and one week will be spent at each of the above named places. Treatment for hook worm will receive special attenti n.
