MRS. J. WM. FLINN j OF COLUMBIA PASSES AWAY AT KINGSTREE WHILE VISITING HER DAUGHTER, MRS. L. W. GILLAND. Mrs Jane Adger Smythe Flinn of: Columbia, widow of the late Rev J Wm Flinn, D D, died early Saturday morning of pneumonia at the home of her daughter, Mrs Louis W Gilland,in Kingstree. She was 65 years of age. The funeral services will be HpIH Mondav in Charleston, probably at the Second Presbyterian church, j of which her father, the late Rev i Thomas Smythe, D D, was for 40 ; years pastor. The interment will be in the churchyard where her late husband was buried in December, 1907. Mrs Flinn was a sister to J Adger Smythe, Augustine T Smythe and Miss Sarah A Smythe, all of Charleston, and Ellison A Smythe of Greenville. She leaves four daughters and one son. The daughters are: Mar% garet, wife of George Howe, professor of Latin in the University of North Carolina; Miss Jean Adger " Flinn, Columbia; Nell, wife of L W Gilland, Kingstree; Sarah, wife of McDavid Horton of The State, Co lumbia; Sue, wife of Kenneth M James, Darlington. Her son.Smythe Flinn, is aide to Dr Wilfred T Grenfell in the Royal Mission to Deep Sea Fishermen. He is stationed at the head of Hamilton inlet, in northern Labrador. Mrs Flinn was born in Charleston March 4,1849. She was married December 20,1876,to Rev J Wm Flinn, a native of Mississippi, who, after serving throughout the War between the Sections in the Army of Northern Virginia, had been educated at the University of Mississippi and at the Columbia Theological ? ? ri* T?llnn Tiroc seminary, uuiuujuia. i/i muu ? uo for some years pastor of Memorial Presbyterian church, New Orleans. Afterwards, for nearly a score of years, he was professor of psychology and philosophy in the University of South Carolina. The residence at Sumter and Pendleton streets, Columbia, which he occupied during the term of his professorate, is now the Young Men's Christian association building of the university and in his honor is called Flinn hall. News of the death Saturday at Kingstree of Mrs J William Flinn N came as a shock to her friends in Columbia. It had become known that she was seriously ill, but few realized the critical nature of her illness. Mrs Flinn, who had lived in Columbia for many years,had endeared herself to many, especially to the college students.who found a cordial welcome in her home on the campus while Dr Flinn was serving the university.? Mr Keels Kirby visited friends in this vicinity Sunday afternoon of last week. Mrs L T Dubose spent Saturday with her aunt, Mrs J M Coker. We are still having very pleasant weather, although we think a good rain would help the corn crop. Santa Barbara, Cal, May 9:?Charles W Post, a wealthy cereal food manufacturer, of Battle Creek,Mich, today shot himself to death with a rifle while temporarily insane, according to testimony of his physician, Dr J C Bainbridge, offered at an inquest held shortly after the tragedy. The verdict of the coroder's jury was non-committal, holding that Mr Post died from the effects of a gunshot wound. Mr Post recently made a hurried trip to Rochester, Minn, to undergo a major operation to save his life.
