Lake City, S. C. Semi-Weekly State 1.85 A Year. F COUNTY AND STATE Consistency a Jewel. When Governor Blease attended the conference of Governors in Richmond, Va, several months ago, he brought down a storm of criticism on his head by shouting, in the midst of his speech, "To hell with the Constitution!" When the newspapers throught the country bitter ly attacked him for making sucn a; remark, he excl limed that his speech had not been fully reported?that' what he meant was "to hell with' the Constitution that required him I to call out the State Militia to pro-f tect a negro brute for criminally, assaulting a white woman." Personally, this writer believes that no punishment is too severe for such a fiend?that the quicker he is out of the way, the better for everybody concerned?provided the guilty party is caught. At the March, 1910, term of court for Barnwell county, Neckey Colley, a negro, was tried and convicted of assault to ravish and sentenced to \ eight years' imprisonment. Last! week he was paroled by the Gov- J ernor during good behavior. Now. here was a case where the j law was allowed to take its course. A fair and impartial trial was given the accused man. Did the jury err in convicting him? Twelve men decb ed him guilty and he was duly j sentenced by the trial Judge. Yet Governor Klease, in the face of his ranting about lynehings, is in a fair way to make them more frequent by his indiscriminate use (or abuse) of the pardoning power. How long will the people of South Carolina allow this man, who thinks only of his own political advancement, to pull the wool over their eyes and induce them to vote blindly for one who, in the opinion of of many good, law-abiding citizens, has placed a premium upon murder? Truly, "Consistency, thou art a jewel!''?Barnwell People. CHILLS AND FEVER !! OR ANY FEVER " m i^^&The Reliabl There is always lantern around thi yard, in the cellai wherever a lamp or unsafe. D. 1, Athens, Ohio, whose portrait appears above, writes: "I think I would have been dead long ago if it hkd not been for Peruna. Six years ago I had !%grippe very bad. The doctor came to see me every day, but I gradually grew worse. I told my husband I thought I would surely die if I did not get relief soon. "One day I picked up the newspaper and accidentally found a testimonial of a woman who had been cured of grip by Peruna. I told my husband I wanted to try It. He went directly to the drug store and got a bottle of Peruna. I could see the Improvement in a very short time ana was soon able to do my work. I continued using it until I was entirely cured." <. Mr. Victor Patneaude, 328 Madison St., Topeka, Kas., writes: "Twelve years ago I had a severe attack of la grippe and I never really recovered r.iy health and strength, but grew weaker every year, until I was unable to work. "Two years ago I began using reruna and it built up my strength so that in a couple of months I was able to go to work again. This winter 1 had another attack of la grippe, but Peruna soon drove it out of my system. My wife and I consider it a household remedy."
