Winthrop College, Rock Hill, January 10:?We are glad to know that Dr Johnson has succeeded in getting Madame Schumann-Heink,the greatest living contralto, to give a concert here on the night of February 24. On the morning after our arrival at Winthrop we were an reeling rather blue and home-sick, after having spent such a pleasant Christmas vacation at our respective homes, but the warm welcome given to us by Dr Johnson, when we assembled at chapel, made us all feel glad to be back. The student body was represented at the Kansas City Student Volunteer association by six of our girls and their chaperon, Miss Pearle McCrary, who is the General Secretary of the Y W C A, at Winthrop. v The number of poor reports made during the first term of this school vear was smaller than it has ever been in the history of the college. Out of 810 only 81 poor reports were made. On account of being exposed to small-pox while visiting in Florence during the Christmas holidays, Miss Hannah Plowden had to go home last Wednesday. We hope that she will be with us again in a very short while. M J. Mrs Theodosla Saunders Dead. Doiny Well. j Florence, January 9: - Congress- J man J Willard Ragsdale, who was operated on for gall-stones Thursday afternoon, is now doing well. He is at the hospital, where the operation was performed. His physician expects his early recovery. Mr Ragsdale was seized with a very painful attack of what was supposed to be acute indigestion on Saturday before Christmas. He has not been well since that time. He came home from his duties in Washington on Christmas day and had ni/vVtf anoiner HiiacK. uu mc uigui/ ai?i Christmas. He has been confined to his bed since Monday afternoon, having suffered a great deal until 1 the operation. He was in his office for a while on Monday afternoon, but was too sick to attend to business. He was taken to the infirmary on Thursday afternoon and operated on late in the afternoon. Mr Ragsdale has received numerous telegrams and letters from his Congressional and other friends expressing hope for a speedy recovery. His physician today issued the following statement: "Mr Ragsdale was operated on Thursday afternoon and a large number of gallstones removed. A pancreatitis also existed. His presI ent condition is favorable, temperature and pulse being normal, and the indications are that his con A.. valescence will be uninterrupted?'' Mr Ragsdale has secured govarnment submarines to visit Georgetown and during the early part of next week a flotilla is expected to arrive there. Mr Ragsdale was to have been there and is sorry not to be able to share in the warm welcome the "jackies" will receive on their visit. Wish We Had 1,000 Like Him. Editor County Record:?
