FIRST CONFEDERATE FLAG Said to Biave Been Designed by an Alabama Artist. (Montgomery Dispatch to New York Sun). In view of the controversy that has arisen as to who was the designer of the original flag of the Confederacy, the Advertiser states that * ' L-11 Wicoia MfiXSCnail, a aim uiaxvouicui of engineers under Gen "Dick" Taylor, Col Samuel H Lockett, and Gen Stephen D Lee, not only designed original flag, but also the gray uniform adopted by the Government of the Confederate States of America. The Advertiser declares that the original designs for the flag of the Confederacy and the gray uniform of the South were painted by Nicola Marschal). in his studio in the town of Marion, Ala, in tne latter part of April or early in May, several weeks after the opening of hostilities. Explaining the designing of the flag Mr Marschall, who still is hale and hearty at the age of 84, stated: "I was at work in my studio late one afternoon, when Mrs Napoleon Lockett entered. She said, 'Mr Marshall, the South has seceded, and we want you to paint a flag for us.' I took ud a card and my materials, and in about fifteen or twenty minutes dashed off three designs for a flag. While I was engaged with the task Mrs Lockett stood by and made a few suggestions. When I had finished I gave her the card, with the three designs in colors, and the turned to go. I was just on the point of turning back to my other work when she stopped on the threshold. 'Oh, yes,' she said, 'we also want you to design a uniform.' I realized at once that this would require several days. The design would have to be worked out carefully, and painting the human figure, too, woiid take time. The following day I gave her the design for the gray uniform." The Mrs Lockett referred to by the venerable artist was the mother of Col Samuel H Lockett. The designs for the flag and the uniform, according to Mr Marschall, were taken by Mrs Lockett to Governor Moore, who in turn submitted them to the inspection of several men prominent in the South at the time of the secession. He does not know who these men were, or whether the wishes of Jefferson Davis were considered when a choice among the three designs was made. CAN YOU DOUBT IT?
