Mr G A Johnson of Darlington spent Sunday in town with the family of Mrs Olive Flowers. The annual meeting of the stockholders of the Bank of Williamsburg will be held Saturday, January 10. Mr J P Davis, of Draughan's Business College,Columbia,spent several days in Kingstree last week with tnenas. Mrs E 0 Taylor of Greelyville and her mother, Mrs?Terry of Atlanta, Ga, are guests of Mrs W L Taylor this week. Miss Nora Elliott, who has been on a two weeks' visit to her sister, Mrs G W Hightower, at Denmark, has returned home. The weather is a trite subject for discussion, but the frosts that have been precipitated the past few days have been as white as "young snows." Mrs R J Kirk visited her friend, Mrs J G McMaster of Florence, Saturday and Sunday last and attended the services at St John's Episcopal church. Mrs C 0 Thompson and her two pretty little children of Charleston are spending the week with Dr and Mrs A M Snider, Mrs Thompson's parents. Mr and Mrs Willie Plowden and little daughter of Atlanta, Ga, are visiting the family of Mr Plowden's uncle, Mr S A Nettles, at the Kellahan .,otel. Mr N Stuckey came up from Fowler Monday to meet his wife and sister. Miss Addie Stuckey. who have been visiting relatives at Bishopville and Hartsyille. We acknowledge with appreciative thanks a copy of the handsome calendar that is being sent out to its friends and patrons by the Farmers & Merchants Bank of Lake City. Mr Thos McCutchen. manager of the Williamsburg Live Stock Co, is in Richmond this week buying a carload of horses and mules which will arrive at their stables here Saturday. Mr Fred A Wagner of Southampton, New York, was in town Friday of last week. Mr and Mrs Wagner, are guests of Mr H A Kennedy, of I the Hebron section,during the hunt-: ing season. Prof George McCutchen, a mem- j ber of the South Carolina Univer-; sity faculty, returned to Columbia Monday afternoon, after spending the holidays with his home folk in; Kingstree and vicinity. The Cockfield Live Stock Companv of Jonsonville has been chartered with a capital stock of $5,000, the officers being R L Cockfield. vice president; S R Cockfield, president; Walter Poston, secretary and treasurer. Dr Benton McQ Montgomery left for Hemingway this week to cast his lot in that thriving municipality. We bespeak for our esteemed young friend the success that, we feel sure, he will merit in that favored section. County Treasurer Cook informs us that he has issued 212 more tax receipts than at the same period last year. While this difference is not phenomenal, it at least shows that the county is not goi^? backward financially. The many friends of Mr C Constine. better known to some of our readers as "Poor Conrad," will regret to learn that he has been quite ill during the past two weeks. We are pleased to state, however, that he is now on the mend. Our wide-awake White Oak correspondent, Mr B W McElveen, sent us a fine, fat 'possum Monday. To say that it was gratefully received but faintly expresses the appreciation we feel toward our friend for his act of thoughtful kindness. The Kingstree High and Graded school reopened Monday with aM the teachers present and a large attendance of pupils, all much refreshed 1 and ready to take up the session's j work where it was left off December 19 for the Christmas holidays. We are sincerely grateful to the kind and thoughtful friends who have so generously remembered the editor and his family the past week with all the delicacies of the season: sausage, liver pudding, "Kentucky oysters" and birds?so that while they lasted, we enjoyed a veritable feast. Mr W V Strong has removed his family from Zeb to Kingstree, where they now occupy their former residence in North Kingstree. Mr Strong, who has been ill for several months past, is able to be about strain anH will leave in a few davs for Johns Hopkins hospital at Baltimore, where he will undergo treatment. The well-known law firm of Willcox & Willcox of Florence has dissolved co-partnership, dating from January 1, 1914. This is one of the strongest and best known firms of attorneys in this section of the State. We understand that Henry E Davis, Esq, formerly of this county, will continue to be associated with P A Willcox, Esq. The annual meeting of the stockholders of the Kinjcstree Hardware Co was held Tuesday. It was shown that the business of the year 1913 was the largest and most profitable enjoyed by the company since its organization. The old officers were reelected, as follows: J W King, president; W H Carr,general manager; C C Burgess, secretary-treasurer. Mr W H Hand, State High School Inspector, of Columbia delivered a highly interesting and instructive address before an audience at the court house Tuesday nighi. His remarks dealt with high schools and were interspersed with much good humor. Yesterday Mr Hand inspected the local high school and, so far as we can learn, was well pleased with the work of the school. Mr Sidney Landon, character artist,will appear at the school auditorium here on the night of January 19 as the third number of the lyceum course which was started by Mr J H Scott some months ago. The meeting is spoken of as the best ever held by the local camp. The attendance was unusumly large and there was no lack of enthusiasm. Joe Pressley shot and killed Jacob Epps, another negro,about two miles east of town. The shooting occurred in the yard of the Pressley cabin and seems to have been premeditated, or rather J-- i : 1 ohnnt. UUf tu au innate pciitiiaui *v>i amoving on the part of the negro Pressley, who has twice served on the chaingang for the wilful and reckless use of shooting irons, immediately after the shooting Pressley attempted to escape, but was soon followed by a posse of citizens from Kingstree, headed by Jailer Cockfield with bloodhounds, and,finding escape impossible, he came to the home of Deputy Sheriff McCants about 11 o'clock Friday night in company with his brother, Willis, and gave himself up. Coroner H U Kinder held an inquest over the dead man Saturday, when sufficient evidence was adduced to warrant the arrest of Willis and Louis Pressley, brothers of Joe, as accessories to the killing. Local Items. Mr J W King of Savage was in Kingstree Tuesday. Hon R H Kellahan, who has been confined to his room by illness the past week, is still quite sick. The four-day-old infant of Dr and Mrs E T Kelley died yesterday afternoon. Much sympathy is felt for the bereaved parents by their friends. The presiding elder, Rev H Bascomb Brown,was in the city on Sunday la3t and held his first quarterly conference at Duncan Methodist church in the morning and preacnea a most interesting sermon. In the evening he was at the West End church and conducted the services at that church and held the first quarterly conference there. This was Mr Brown's first official visit to I Georgetown and he made a favorable I impression, not only with the Methodist, but with all with whom he I came in cantact.? Georgetown Times.
