Among the visitors were: Mr and Mrs H Chandler of Salters Depot, Mrs? Dubose of Olanta. Mrs Theodore Britton a: d children, of Salters vicinity, Mrs M C Mouzon of Kingstree, Miss Gertrude Colclough of Summerton and Mr and Mrs?Evans. Mr and Mrs Santa Claus, of the "North Pole." were the sensation of tho hour and ?ftpr a sneech fiom Mrs Santa Claus to the school, they proce?ded to distribute the numerous presents from the beautiful tree. As they had arrived in a "six-reindeer sleigh from icy Greenland,where they dwell, and as they had to visit the children in far-away France, Norway and Paraguay, they had to haste away." The exercises closed with a wand drill by the school. Promptly at 8 o'clock j\ m. the exercises were begun by the school with recitations, speeches and songs. Miss Lizzie Pearce recited an in tdresting piece and afterwards Rev Mr Bedenbaugh, of the Salters Methodist church, made an address on the origin of Christmas, the duties and pleasures of that sacred time. Mr J W Covington acted as Santa Claus, and after distributing presents to the pupils, made a pleasant talk in his official capacity as president of the "Rural School Improvement association." While over at Columbia, S C, attending the Fair, one of the many farmers we met enjoying the sights was S C Majors, a prosperous farmer of Anderson couuty, S C. On Saturday morning following we were in Anderson and met Mr Majors driving a fine horse to his buggy ? mill/ /tvaam guiug aiuuuu senium uum, kinuu and turnips. We told him we were glad to see a farmer in town with something to sell, that we liked to see a gentleman who was willing to sell stuff in town as well as to come there for the purpose of buying. He replied, "While I was down in Columbia this week I found out that if I would break a twenty-dollar bill and spend a dollar here, half a dollar there, it would soon all be gone. I'll have to reverse this plan. If I make a half dollar here and a dime there, I'll soon have enough to make a twenty-dollar bill." No man should be above doing any honest work to make a dollar. We like to see farmers selling their produce in town, whether it be milk, eggs, potatoes or turnips. It is just as honorable as it is for the merchant to sell calico and cheese.
