Columbia, December 6: - Robert Marshall colored, was killed tonight by Attorney General Thomas H Pee-1 pies at the Elks' club in this city,. v. here the negro was employed as chef. The inquest will be held at J toon tomorrow. According to those at the club the shooting was entirely accidental and Mr Peeples is sorry beyond expression at the happening. It was a pistol shot.the ball piercing the brain of the negro. The occurrence was about 10 o'clock. Mr Peeples rested tonight at the Gov ernor's mansion, where he went just j after the shooting took place. Governor Blease was out of the j city, being at his home in Newberry, j He made an effort, according to! friends, to come here late tonight, j but could not reach the city. He is expected to return early tomorrow. The news of the shooting spread about the city, though every effort was made to keep it quiet. Many friends thought it best not to publish anything about the affair, but as it was an accidental killing, according to those at the club tonight, others deemed it best that the facts Tl,a rloruilc urill f?r?mp Allt LfC MiUVY ll. Sheriff tyeCain was on hand personally at the club soon after the shooting and on the suggestion that Mr Peeples get a good night's rest at the Governor's mansion he sent a deputy with him. Sheriff McCain v/as heard to express the opinion that this was a matter r. form, altnough the shooting was explained as accidental. J F Weaver, attendant at the club, is quoted as saying that Mr Peeples was passing a gun over the ct nter to him when it exploded, the r??>rf?inor hr?in r?f np. A brother of the dead negro was present at the shooting. He afterwards stated that he had heard no words between his brother and Mr Peeples, and the first thing he knew was the report of the pistol, which he was very much surprised to hear. The brother is an employe of the club also. It has been very difficult to secure any coherent statement of the affair tonight, and it will be after the inquest at noon tomorrow before all the details will be obtainable. All those present agree, however, that the shooting was accidental. Mr Peeples was asked for a statement and said he would make one tomorrow. THE CORONER'S INQUEST. That Robert Marshall, the negro cook at the Elks' club, came to his death Saturday night from the accidental discharge of a pistol in the hands of Attorney General Thomas H Peeples, was the verdict of the Coroner's jury in the foregoing case.
