BE\RON BREEZES. Protracted Meeting Closes?Cotton Picking Begins?Baseball. Benson, September 3:? The protected meeting at Cedar Swamp closed Sun day evening.after a week's services. Rev D A Phillips of Kingstree assisted the pastor, Rev J L Mullinix, in a series of interesting, plain and practical sermons that no doubt impressed his congregation for the better. The closing sermons were preached by Rev Mr Mullinix, who pleaded earnestly with his people to press forward in the righteous cause. Cotton-picking has begun, closely following tobacco curing and selling and erelong the planting of oats and fall plowing will be in operation. The old plan of farmers resting many months in the year is relegated to the past in this section and our progressive farmers are busy people the year round. Last Saturday the White Oak baseball team played the Benson boys on the local diamond. The boys in uniform with the letters "W 0" and numbers from 1 to 9 consecutively inter-woven play well, but the boys at home played so much better that the game was called at eight and one-half innings, as the score was decidedly in favor of Benson. Mr Hamilton Boykin and Mr Smith of Dalzell were visitors here Sunday. Mr and Mrs R S BeU are visiting -j. xl. i r if., i v \k at tne nume ox Mr o x uxcvjui. Mrs Marion Scott was here last week attending the protracted meeting at Cedar Swamp. Miss Ruth Phillips began teaching school Monday. The patrons had engaged her services since last summer, when the school closed, for this fall. This is an evidence of interest and progress and should be the method of every school in employing teachers. We regret to say that the Cedar Swamp school at the present writing is without a full corps of teachers and will not likely begin work before some time in October. Mr S Alex Tisdale was unfortunate in the loss by death of a very fine colt last week. WES. AI I FMBAI.E POLICE CHIEF SLAIN By J L Walker, a Section Foreman, Who Is Under Arrest. Allendale, August 31:?J B Harter, chief of police of Allendale, according to news received here, was shot and killed to-day about 3 p. m. by J L Walker, at Lena, a station on the Southern Railway in Hampton county, where he had gone to take into custody a negro prisoner. While Harter waited at the depoi to take the train home, Walker, who is the section foreman at that place, is renortpH to hnvp nnnrnnphpH without. wv. ? " ?rr- "? warning and shot Harter, killing him instantly. It is said that Walker had an old grudge against Harter and had made threats against his life. It seems that about a year and a half ago Harter % arrested and disarmed Walker on the streets of Allendale, hut whether or not this incident had any bearing on the tragedy to-day is not known. Mrs Harter was in Charleston today when her husband was killed. She returned to Allendale tonight. Chief Harter was an efficient and faithful officer and highly respected citizen,a prominent Mason and Knight of Pythias. His sudden and tragic death is a great shock to the community. It is recalled that he made a brave stand against the negro, Henry Austin, when Magistrate Fred Edenfield was shot down by the latter from ambush on May 1, last. He leaves a wife and six children. It is reported that Walker is under i. a 3 i arrest auu js si.gn uy wounueu. Trunks,Suit Cases and Hand Bags ?in many styles?at People's Mercantile Co's.
