A disp .tchfrom Bluffton says that that town and the surrounding region are in a state of excitement, following an attempted assault by a negro upon the wife of a prominent citizen Tuesday evening. The woman was preparing supper at the time, her husband not having returned from work. About half-past seven o'clock a negro suddenly appeared ? L. and attacked the woman, wno * wrenched herself free and ran from the house. She hastened to the home of a neighbor and gave the alarm and a V posse was quickly in pursuit of the black,who is described by his intendS ed victim as being about 30 years *Vold, over six feet in height and of a ? * dark,ginger-cake color. A negro anffl swering that description was arrestm ed Wednesday morning at Ridgeland 98 by the chief of police and is being S held tbere. rA negro named Jackson,answering the description of the assailant, was killed at Bluff ton Wednesday when he resisted arrest, and the negroes are threatening reprisals. It is believed there that Jackson is the negro who attacked the woman. Governor Blease has been asked to call out the Beaufort militia for the protection of the citizens of Bluffton. Parties from Ridgeland are has tening to Bluffton in automobiles to aid in controlling the situation, which is beginning to look ugly. The negro, William Jackson, who was shot and instantly killed by State Detective E F Hammond when ? . he resisted arrest Wednesday, nas been declared by the woman upon whom the criminal assault was attempted as being the wrong negro and not the one who made the attempt. Sheriff MOD White, of Beaufort county,has left with a launch full of extra deputies to render aid. Sheriff Porter,of Jasper, is already at Bluffton rendering all possible assistance. The posses are still searching for the negro, but it seems as if he has,made good his escape. The bad weather still continues, which makes the search extremely hard on the men. A late dispatch from the scene of the crime Friday afternoon stated that the search was being kept up but that there wa.i quiet in the community. The Beaufort company is on hand to prevent further trouble. There is power in concert of action. When men rise up in unity to accomplish an object is it always attained. Clarence Scott,a negro man thirty years of age, was arrested at Salters Depot early Tuesday morning for attempting to commit an assault upon a nineteen-year-old colored girl who lives with friends on the farm of Mr James E Davis. Mr Davis made the arrest and brought Scott to. KingBtree Tuesday, where he was lodged in jail. The attempted outrage occurred in the swamp near Salters about sunset Monday. Scott is an old offender against the laws of the land and has served several terms on the county chaingang. The girl and the people with whom she made her home are said to be very respectable negroes and are well though of by the people of the community. Items of General Interest.
