I j Mr Joe Brown of Black Mountain, N C, is visiting relatives here this week. ] Mrs T J.Hogan, who has been in j the Riverside infirmary at Charles- ' ton for the past month, has returned home and is very much improved. Dr J F Haselden, formerly of Greelyville, but now of Johnsonville, spent several days here last week. Mr Robbie Godwin of Kingstree j spent Sunday here with his sister, < Mrs J F Register. Dr R F Zeigler spent Sunday in < Manning. 1 There was a large land sale here < Thursday. Chicago, October 20:?Twenty-five } liniKon^ man u'ftmpr ?nd children. < VIIW UCUUU TI w. , with bowed heads and moistened eyes stood in the streets of Gary, Ind, this afternoon and joined in singing "Nearer, My God, to Thee." It was Gary's reverent, tearful farewell to William Rugh, the newsboy, who lost his life that another life might be spared. The story of William Rugh's heroism?how he neard of Miss Ethel Smith's horrible burns in a motorcycle explosion, how the surgeons said her wounds would never heal unless enough cuticle could be secured to graft on and cover the open surface of her burns, how Gary's crippled "newsie" told the surgeons that they were welcome to his deformed leg if it would answer their purpose, how the offer was accepted, the leg, amputated and the grafting process j successfully wrought, has been told j in Thp World. Rugh did not know ! the girl. !. Miss Smith was recovering rapidly j ] until she was shocked by the news 3 I -j of the death of her benefactor. Now 11 she is in a condition of collapse.
