Should Pay More. The grand jury calls attention . in their ' Final Presentment'' to the fact that while the responsibility of the ofliee of County Superintendent of education has increased more than three-fold within the past decade, the salary of that official has remained ^ stationary. The pittance paid the official intrusted with the super-, vision of our schools is wholly incommensurate with tiie duties imposed upon him, and no capable man, unless he were able to give his services out of pure philanthropy, could afford to hold wivn it ]ii? ont i po line Vim l (tliu *v tn. v/>*v**v attention. These times of expensive living the salary paid the Sujxjrintendent of Education would ' ? l)e inadequate to support a single man, much less a man .with a, family. 0 We approve most heartily of the grand jury's recommendation that the salary be raised, and the holder of the office be reft t L - tnis omce. JUSTICE J. M. HARLAN DEAD. 1 ???? Oldest Member U. S. Supreme Court Passed Suddenly Away. Washington, October 14.?Associate Justice John M. Harlan, oldest member of the Supreme Court of the United States, for years conspicuous in Kentucky politics, once candidate for the Republican nomination for Vice President of the United States, a foremost constitutional authority and prominent in the councils of the Presbyterian church, died at his home in this city today. He was seventy-eight years old last June. Justice Harlan had been ill with acute bronchitis less than a week. He sat on the bench last Monday when the court heard arguments on the so-called anthracite coal trust case. The following morning Chief Justice White announced that Justice Harlan was "slightly ill" and yesterday .asked attorneys to consider that Justice Harlan was sitting in their cases, although not physically present. Justice Harlan, however, was in a much more serious condition than his colleagues in the court realized. Despite his advanced age. he was robust and ordinarily enjoyed the best of health.
