TOBACCO COMING IN?CROPS
SUFFER FROM LACK OF RAIN
--MAINLY ABOUT PEOPLE.
f
Lake City, July 11:?Mr and Mrs
J M Truluek returned home Satumay
after an absence of about a month.
The former, who spent most of the
time in Hot! Springs, Ark, joined
Mrs Truluek in Newark, N J, and
/>
and they came home together. Mrs
Truluck visited her brother in the
New Jersey city.
Messrs 0 S Baldwin and B Wallace
Jones. Jr,?went to Leaksvi lieSpray,
N C, last Tuesday and will
return the latter part of this week.
The object of the visit is largely
business, but they will make no effort
to avoid whatever pleasures
may come their way.
Mr Timmons Cockfield of Vernon,
Ga, is visiting relatives in and near
town. This young man is a son of
Mr Eddie Cockfield, who is well
known throughout this section.
Miss Heloise Sturgeon visited her
sister, Mrs S W^G Shipp, in Florence
recently.
Rev L N Chappelle, who is now
the pastor of the Baptist church at
Easley, is here on a visit to members
of his erstwhile flock.
The Philathea class of the Baptist
Sunday-school gave an ice-cream
-* supper at H S Blizzard's on Friday
evening last passed.
Will some one kindly explain what
it means- when a young man takes
hia girl out for a ride in a carriage
drawn by a pair) of horses? An
. eighteen-inch buggyjand a last year's
mule are generally'considered roomy
enough and swift enough for such a
drive.
Dr and Mrs W H Woods sailed
from London for home on the 13th
instant. The trip will take about a
wrccft, <ui wiu.
Mr M A Thomas, "although only a
young man of about sixty, has given
up surveying. Thus passes out of
active life the most activeJand thoroughly
reliable engineer that this
aection has known in more than a
generation,
Mr and Mrs J S McClam and
daughter, Miss Maggie, are at Glenn
Springs. They will be away about
0 two weeks.
Miss Eunice Kennedy of Kingst.-ee
is visiting her uncle and aunt.
Mr and Mrs G R Bowen.
Mr J A Ridley, who is now in
t Charleston, was in town Sunday. It
is said that his coming here so systematically
is to be attributed to a
certain "bird."

Tobacco is coming in right lively
I now. Several thousand pounds have
, | been sold,and the loads have already 11
| become so frequent that their pas?- n
! ing has ceased to attract attention. *
. As is well known, the crop will be
, below the average, throughout the 0
entire tobacco section of the State, j ^
It is probable that this territory will!
come nearer marketing a good crop ^
than any other in the State, and yet ^
the best estimates place our crop at
about two-thirds of a full crop. As v
an offset to the lessened quantity, V
the outlook for good prices is excellent.
. a.
Small showers fell over different n
; sections of this territory last week, E
' and there are now but few neighbor- n
hoods that have not had at least h
some rain. Apparently the quanti- n
ty received is not what is needed Jbut fi
too much rain just now would work
I havoc. Corn is suffering worse than e
; anything else, and, unless it gets a E
; good deal of rain soon, it is bound to
fail. Most of it is green, except
where the tops burned out.and seemH w
in a healthy state. However, we
, have seen some fields that are' 'fired" ^
thirty inches up the stalk. ^
