Please J>ear this in mind. tf Governor Bleaae's Pardons. The recent pardons by Governor Bleaae have been exciting a great deal of wonder and comment. The State today prints a story that looks rather queer. It cites the fact that a man applied to Featherstone's campaign manager last summer for a pledge to grant a pardon to James W Gallman, convicted in Union county of murder, offering political influence and support if the pledge were given. It was refused by Mr Featherstone's manager, very properly and promptly, and the man left in a hurry to catch a train. Yesterday the notice of a pardon to this same James W Gallman was given out from the Governor's office. There may be no connection, but the man who offered Featherstone's manager the exchange of political influence for his promise, and who hurried off to catch a train, and whose name was Gallman,'ought to be investigated.? Instructive Address to Patrons and Pnpils of the Graded School. Benson, March 20:?Prof W K | Tate, who holds the distinguished and j responsible position of State Super- j inWndent of elementary schools, vis-1 ited our neighborhood last week and ! took occasion to deliver an address to patrons and pupils of the school at the Cedar Swamp school building, taking as his theme the means by which the school term could be lengthened and the school eventually merged into a high school. Our district is now taxed four mills special, but as this amount is inadequate, he advised an additional four mills to supplement the present levy. He als3 recommended that the poll tax dodger and the canines whose masters wilfully overlook them should be placed on the Auditor's books. Prof Tate spoke in a very complimentary manner of the possibilities of the Wiliiamsburg soil as compared with the best counties of the State, but remarked that j the taxable value of the soil per acre (which is $2) is the lowest of any county except Horry, and that one he did not ask concerning the return value. He went on to say, as we sell our land for more, in like manner, it should be taxed higher. Mr Tate was originally from Ar kansas, but was superintendent of Memminger school in Charleston for a number of years. He has fully identified himself with this State and is well versed in matters pertaining to our schools. Messrs G Ollie Epps,\V E Snowden den and J Y McGill will visit Taft to witness the demonstration of ditch digging with dynamite. At this writing there is much skepticism as to the success of the effort among those who have been using the oldtime spade and shovel all their lives. Cedar Swamp Graded school will close Thursday of this week. The many friends, pupils and patrons will regret to see the teachers leave.
