Lake City. December 6:?The general Thanksgiving day was on Thursday. The special THANSGIV-1 INu DAYS (Mr Printer, put these tw words in "caps'' and underscore them, also) of the writer came on Friday and Saturday following. Friday may be the unlucky day for some folks, but not for "yours truly." On that day our good friend Mr J W Lewis, blessed us with a fine 'possum. As he blessed us,; may he likewise reeeive especial fav >r. Then on Saturday Mr D M j Epps filled our cup to overflowing with another 'possum. Sunday, November 27th, the last valued majes-, tv. being already dressed whenfpresented, presided over the dinner 1 fable, over which we .lingered and i lingered some more. The following Sunday, December j 4. (both red letter days) His Excel- < lency, of the first mention made ns 1 glad when the tinkling bell summoned us to the midday meal. His ex- j cellency was exreUmt in his life, more | | excellent in his death and "ioxt ex-! < eeliAt when presented, dredged , vri:h cayenne and flanked by sweet' j potatoes. If there is one meat on >arth that is better than 'possum, it' ^ has escaped the writer's attention, i *v And the man who doesn't like 'pos-! c .sum is fit for treason, deeds dark c and bloody. Let no such man be trusted. Selah! ? Mr Benjamin Tipjoett^died Friday night at the private sanitariu^i of ' Drs Rollins and Woods, where he a was operated upon some days ago. t He was a man well' advanced in " veers and suffered from a complication of troubles which were beyond v the skill of earthly physicians. He . ha i been in this section several years t yet nobody seems to know much 1 about him. He had no famiiv, and 1 did n->t speak of himself or his past j ? lif \ i>eing apparently reticent about' | dis 'u sing this subject. Quietly and , harmlessly he lived to himself and > died with no loving hands to close j his eyes, and was buried byj Strang- ^ ers in a stranger's grave. He stat- 1 e 1 that he had a brother, Joseph j Tippett, in Lucama. N C. Nothing j , beyond this is known of his kin- ( dre i. J 1 ( apt H 0 Snow died November j; J7, at his home in Abbeville, Ga. { from a stroke of paralysis, of which : he had previously had two other j ^tr >kes. He left his widow, ten \ children and a number of grand children surviving. All of his life, up t about fifteen or twenty yearsj ago. was spent in this county, and I during several of these years/,he j lived at Lake City and Kingstree. |, .Mr J J Snow of Rome is a nephew, and Mrs F. \V Yates, of the same place, a niece. All over this country he had friends who knew him"*and j i liked him. t..; j [? A H Williams went to Rich-1 nu?nd, Va, Monday on business. Tin* some- j body does not know much about J violins, but has heard or read that an old violin is a very valuable j thing, and because grandfather hap- 1 pened to leave a violin to assume j duties upon the harp somebody im- j mediately believes that grandfa- i ther's violin is a treasure. As a | matter of fact, ninety-nine times j out of a hundred grandfather in- ! vested in a ten dollar fiddle and i played "Suwanee River" and "An- ! nie Laurie." , 1 When he bought it the violin was worth $10, but since then it has been denreciatinsr in value at the rate of about 10 cents a year. From ' the mere fact that most of the var- j nish, is scratched off and there are several cracks in the instrument it does not follow that it is an "old one." If a violin is good to start with it will improve with age and good ; ?are; but, on the other hand, a poorj fiddle is not benefited to any extent j if it survives a century or two. Don't judge a violin by the label inside of it, says an expert. Anybody can copy an old name and late and paste tbein in. If all the riolins bearing a Stradivarius label vere his, poor old Antonius would ie' .working^ yet at the somewhat idvanced age of more than 200 ears. More than half of the cheap, rorthless violins bear copies of his ?r some other master's label, and ; ven some real old and good instru- , nents have been passed off as the rork of Amati, Guarneri, Magini nd other famous makers. Any one having a violin with the abel of a comparatively unknown naker is likely to be the owner of . more valuable instrument than he person whose fiddle is marked Antonius Stradivarius" There is only one way to find out | rhether or not a violin is living up j1 o its name, and that is to get the udgmcnt of a good dealer. If lie { ells you that your violin is no good, j ut still oirers to buy it, you may j >e quite certain that you have a :ood fiddle. But don't sell it. Take t to some other authority and see rhat he says, but don't make a bargain. You will hear from h!:n if I rour violin is genuine, l'or the sup- ( - .. i i >Iv of valuable ones is sman, ana j rreat rivalry exists among dealers o secure masterpieces. A great many people have the dea that all the very good instru- ! nents are the outj>ut of a half doz?n old geniuses when the truth is that there are scores of old as well is modern makers whose works jring high prices.?Exchange.
