He has issued the following statement: ; "I want to thank, most heartily, j the South Carolina Democrats who supported me in the recent primary, and t?? assure them that I appreciate, more than 1 express, their unwavering loyalty. I am fully conscious of the fact that in the iast primary I drew my ; support from various sources. The prohibitionists supported me, almost to a man. Thousands of local optionists gave me their support j for personal reasons. To them all i 1 desire to express my sincere and ' hearty appreciation. I have been defeated for the of; fice which I sought; but viewed from another standpoint I have not | suffered defeat. I am conscious of 'the fact that I made a clean, honest, ; manly fight. I advocated what I j thought was right, that which I (thought to be best for the State I which I love. I did not engage in ' personal abuse. Not one word did I j say against my opponent. 1 fought 1 for a principle and in tHk true sense I my failure to be elected cannot be called defeat. I To say that I am not disappointed ' would not be true, but I can say, in i all truthfulness,that I accept the rej suit in the best spirit possible. I am j not disgruntled. I shall do all in my power to hold up the hands of the new administration. and I urge my friends and sup| porters to do the same thing. No administration can succeed without the aid and co-operation of all the ; people, and it is always the duty of good citizens to stand by the governI ment and aid in the enforcement of ; law and order. | And especially do I want to thank the newspapers. Nearly all of them stood by me and fought nobly. Conference. 1 The Kingstree District Epworth' i League and Sunday-school Confer-j ence, which has been in session at i Kingstree Methodist church since. 1 I Friday evening,closed Monday evening, September 19. The conference was in every par- ( ticular a marked success. There were ' present between sixty and seventy) delegates,representing as many Sun-i day-schools,arid the several Epworth Leagues in the district. The confer-! ence was opened Friday night at j 8:'10 o'clock with devotional services by Rev W A Fairy, the pastor, who j welcomed the delegates in behalt ol | the church and spoke words of en-1 couragement as to the future of; league work in the district. Then ! followed a splendid address of wel-; come by R J Kirk, Esq, of Kingstree, which was responded to by Mr W J Turbeville of Turbeville. A de-; lightful reception at the residence of | Mr J F McFadden followed this j service. Saturday morning the conference j was formally organized with Mr W J , Turbeville as president and Miss Ro-J berta Coker as secretary. Saturday j night Rev E P Hutson of New Zion j ! JI i Sunday and Monday were devoted : V | to discussions and addresses on Sun ! dav-school work. 1 Rev W P Meadors presided, with j Mr R C Hood as secretary. Mr J M i | Way of Spartanburg,General Super-1 intendent of Sunday-school work in j the South Carolina conference, who^ is an expert in this line and one of j the most skilled of Sunday-schocl workers,made a number of inspiring and helpful talks and addresses. Other addresses by pastors and laymen were of a high order and mucl^ enjoyed. The beautiful anthems sung by the j choir added greatly t6 the enjoy ment of the services.
