The count} executive committee met Thursday at noon.in conformity with the rules of the party, to. tabulate the returns of the primary election held August 30. The meeting being called to order by Chairman j Stoll, the question of a quorum wasj I raised. The roll-call showed that only seven of the twenty-nine members of the committee were present. | The rules are silent as to what number or proportion of the members constitutes a quorum, but, to be on the safe side,the chair suggested that enough proxies be permitted to serve to constitute a majority of the mem bership. A motion to this effect wari offered and carried and the chair announced the meeting ready for ? business. Mr J Wesley Cook, a candidate; for county treasurer, on behalf of himself and the other two unopposed candidates, viz. Auditor Montgomery and Superintendent of EdujTvdation McCulbugh. who were made ' " by the committee to pay double campaign assessment, asked the committee as a matter of right and justice to refund the extra assessment im* ? The books showed that, including the double assessments, there is just about enough money on hand to meet the expenses of the campaign, this being the first year that the committee has ever undertaken to pay the managers in the primaries, and the SI.00 per diem for three managers in eacn election, besides the mileage one way allowed the bearer * ' ? It seemed to be the J 1 opinion of the members that the < motion to place the double tax upon \ i the unopposed candidates was actu- < ated by a spirit of fun or mischief and that the committee did not seriously entertain the idea of forcing them to pay twice for the privilege! i of entering the primary, merely be-1 cause they happened to be unoppos-'1 ed. !. The tabulation of the returns from the several precincts was then pro- < ceeded with and it took several,1 hours of tedious work to tabulate i1 the votes from the twenty-nine pre-! cincts. It was found that at several \ precincts the managers had neglected to enclose a certified statement j of the total number of votes cast f< r county candidates and a motion prevailed that a committee be appoir.ted in each case to tabulate the votes and that their count be accepted by the committee. The official tabulation showed a total vote for the county of 2,044,of which number the following county candidates received a majority and were declared the nominees of the party: House of Representatives? Messrs J C Graham, R H Kellahan and B B Chandler. For State Senate no candidate rej I eeived a majority; Messrs Epps and Beasley ran ahead and were placed in the second primary. For Road Engineer there was no nomination for the same reason as stated above; Messrs Graham and Eaddy, the two candidates receiving the highest vote, will run over. To expedite the matter and save unnecessary' labor and confusion, it was moved and ordered that an auditing committee, composed of two members of the committee to act with the secretary, audit all t?:e claims presented, this woik to be done as soon as practicable after the second primary election. The chair appointed Messrs W C Wilson and James E Davis to act as members of this committee; and the two members were also empowered to examine the claims and vouchers for expenses incurred during the campaign.
