CLEMSON EXTENSION WORK. Colic of Horses and Mules?Th< Cause and the Remedy. Clemson College, July 13:?Th< teem "Colic" is a very loose one covering generally any abdomina pain, and it may readily be inferre< that it occurs in a great variety o diseases. It is however only neces v V sary here to consider it under tw< heads, viz, spasmodic colic and coli* due to impaction or obstruction o the bowels. Spasmodic colic is probably of th< most frequent occurrence and con * < it / sists of a violent contraction 01 m< ^.muscles of the intestines, causinf intense pain. It is usually bnough on by giving large amounts of col< water to a horse over-heated; b; exposing such a horse to chilling rains after a hard drive; sometime by giving a heavy feed of green sue iulent feed; and in horses that ar< predisposed to it, a sudden changi in diet may be all that is necessar; to bring on an attack. # The condition is recognized by th< horse suddenly showing symptoms o intense pain following some of th< causes above mentioned: stampinj violently with one hind foot; lookinj around at the flanks with an anxiou expression; sweating; lying down suddenly ard rolling in agony, ant with occasional periods of freedon from pain followed by similar at tacks. Colic fro oi impaction, as the narrn indicates, is a condition in whicl there is a partial or complete stop page of the bowels, and may b brought on by over-loading th stomach when in a tired-out condi tion and particularly with dry, innu Itritious feed. A faulty condition o the teeth may also be a predispos ing feature on account of imperfec mastication of the food. This con dition is accompanied by constipa tion and the animal shows evidenc of a continuous dull pain as comparei with that of spasmodic colic, movinj stiffly, lying down occasionally am groaning due to absence of violen movements. It also runs a longe course usually than spasmodic colic In spasmodic colic one of the bes remedies is fluid extract of cannabi Jndica. or Indian hemp, given ii .}/vcqo oiv iromi! Kv mnnth U\ATVO V/l CIA V?*V avwvaa This brings on drowsiness and as ; rule by the time the drowsines has worn off the colic has disappear ^ ed. Another good remedy is chlo ral hydrate given in doses of on t ounce dissolved in a pint of water or if a hypodermic syringe be avail able, two grains of sulphate of mor phine may be dissolved in a littl water that has been boiled and al lowed to cool and injected under th skin. With impaction colic, entirely dif ferent remedies are needed, th object being to unload the intestine of the offending material. For thi purpose five crams of aloes dissolv ed in a quart of hot water and cor joined with one ounce of oil of tur pentine and one dram of fluid ex tract of nux vomica may be given,o if this is not conveniently at hand one and a half pints of linseed oi may be given, and if there is evi dence of much pain three drams o cannabis Indica may also be giver Copious rectal injections of soap sud are beneficial also. These remedie <. will usually suffice, but if mor drastic treatment is necessary i I should be entrusted to a veterina rian. _ Napoleon's Grit was of the unconquerable,never-sa> die kind, the kind that you need mos when you have a bad cold, cough o lung disease. TAKEN TO SCENE OF CRIME. e Alleged Negro Murderer Delivered to Florida Authorities. r\ 01 -a n 1. r L>epuiy onenn rrmm wjuuu, m ? Orange county,Florida, arrived here 1 Friday to take back with him to the 1 scene of his crime Will'am McNulf ty, who on June 3 of this year at - Conley's, a little lumber camp in ^ Florida, shot to death another negro c named Tom Brower. The account of f the killing given by the deputy [Sheriff makes McNulty guilty of a ^ cold-blooded murder. McNulty was i - a hip-pocket liquor vendor and e Brower, one of his customers, failed ? to meet a small debt owed the fort mer, when McNulty told him him if i he didn't pay the money "he woi^ Y shoot it out of him." McNulty ct ? ried out his threat by getting h ? sj shot-gun and firing two loads ' * -1 ' 1 / - bucK-snot tnrougn crower s neni s He escaped after the killing and came e to this county, some of his wife's peo y pie, the officer said, living in the Johnsonville section. While there he e got in the toils of the law and after f being put in jail here admitted that & he was wanted in Florida for mur? der.as we stated last week. He de? nied later on having made this ads mission and went with the deputy i Sheriff Friday night under protest, I though he waived extradition. The i Florida official, though he could not - personally identify the negro, seems confident that he has the right man, e who,he says, received a life sentence i for murder some years ago and was - pardoned by Governor Broward. e It seems a little strange that the e Florida authorities had offered no - reward for the apprehension of this i- desperate criminal. f STOCK LAW ELECTION. 1 "For Exemption" Won on Faceof Ret urns--Will Be Contested.
