Even the drug stores were closed until six o'clock in the afternoon. The day was observed in aj quiet, orderly manner, and not af-j ter the criminal fashion of Northern communities that make it a day for j murdering children and many grown J folks, too. The friends of Mr Eugene Johnson here?and there are many?will be pleased to learn that he is getting on well at Draughon's Business Col-; lege, Columbia. Eugene is a delicate boy and has lost much time from sickness, but he has the true grit and manhood that is bound to tell. He studies as long as he can hold up ond even when forced to his bed, he has no idea of giving up. In his latest letter he says he is going to "stick it through," and he will} do it too. He is a manly, earnest' boy, and among his other good qualities has that ennobling virtue with-; out which there can be no true char-1 acter ?he honors his father and mother. We wish him well. The tobacco season opened here last week. Daily sales have been going on for several days now. Some fifteen loads were on the floors Sat-! urday. Of course it is only sand lugs, which are of very inferior grade. The prices average about five cents per pound. ' > The estimate wnicn seems iu mr the most reasonable, places the shortage in the tobacco crop of this section at about thirty per cent. This is due to the unusually cold spring and the excessive rainfall of the last thirty days; and if the rains continue the crops produced will have what tobaco men call "poor body." Mr P D Snowden of Church was noted on our streets one day last week. Mr J LStuckeyiwill open a branch Jivery and sales fstables at St Steph< S THE' r Our Line of 1 e carry the most < ou.
