LYNCH GOMES BACK AT MR. COCKFIELD. A NUMBER OF AFFIDAVITS EVTRODUCED-THE "SHORTER AND umipd urnDn" acain WJrm vwnv BMia Editor County Record:? Please allow me space in your columns to explain my position relative to certain charges made against me in The County Record and over the signature of one P D Cockfield in regard to a certain portion of Williamsburg county being annexed to Florence county. As a matter of fact I am not responsible for words, utterances or statements made by any gentleman. This is a free country, to a certain extent, and God has given us the ability to try and express ourselves when we' see fit and so desire. And I, clothed with the presumption of having the right to administer an oath (and will do so until the contrary is proven) have acted within my limitation in all my dealings and transactions, and moreover have been taught that in all such transactions the broadest spirit of wisdom, truthfulness, justice and harmony should characterize the thoughts and actions of every citizen in the community. I will not attempt to repeat any of the language UbCU 111 U1C SU-VOIICU VUVI\II%.1U iu v. cle, for such we do not regard as being used by any man of true elevating and noble ideas. He is absolutely incorrect in what he has stated relative to certain affidavits signed by J R Casselman, C R Benton and O G Shaffer. STATE OF SOUTH CAROLINA, I COUNTY OF WILLIAMSBURG. f Personally appeared before me J Ralston Casselman, who, being duly sworn, says: I am a citizen of Wil'iamsburg county, 39 years of age and live in the High Hill section, and that on or about the 4th day of June, A D 1910, I made a statement of my own free will and accord relative to a certain portion of Williamsburg county being annexed to Florence, and afterward made affidavit to same, which appears in The County Record under date of June 9, 1910. r\r\ fVic f rvl lmi'i n rr MnnHflV I1UW, V/U UIV AVilv ?? * ^ I June 13, 1910, Messrs John McGutchen and P D Cockfield came to me at my residence and asked me to go to Bass or Baldwin and make affidavit to bring me out of the trouble of whrch Dr Lynch wrote, and I said: "I have nothing tp take back with the exception of the words 'entire territory'. I meant all whom the petition had been presented to. In Dr Lynch's writing he had used the words 'entire territory', when I merely meant all to whom the petition had been presented. With that exception the affidavit is absolutely correct, and I now stand to it, and I regret very much Mr Cockfield has twisted my language and told absolutely false remarks. J Ralston Casselman. Witness: C I Bragdon. Sworn to before me this 25th day of June, A D 1010. William S Lynch, Notary Public for S C. STATE OF SOUTH CAROLINA, \ county of williamsburg. j . Personally appeared before me J Ralston Casselman, who, being duly sworn, says: That on the 14th day of June, 1910, I was at the store of R E McKnight and was then aftd there approached by P D Cockfieid and J H V Gaskins and Mr Cockfieid said: "Can I see you a minute?" I said: "Yes." , I stepped off with him a short distance and he said: "Have you sent your letter to The Record?" I said: "No, but have decided to leave the matter where it stands." He said: "Well, I can save you a little trouble if you wish to make a statement now. I have Mr Gaskins here." I said: "I have no statement 4 4 4 4 4 4 sthing Going C Never before have such rmerly 15c. merly 12 l-2c. erly 15c. erly 12 l-2c. ly $1.00. ly 75c. IN AND TAKE A LOOK. " I said: "Letmeask you a question?" He consented. I said: "Now, when I gave you my reasons for not signing your petition why didn't you say to me as you did to Mr McKnight when he gave you his reasons for not signing? You told him you did not blame j him." Cockfield's answer was that McKnight could read the petition and you (Casselman) could not. I said: "Cockfield, you have taken the advantage of me, and I am not going to sign any affidavit for you." In talking with Mr Cockfield I asked him the question, "Has everybody in Scranton signed your petition?" and he assured me that the petition would be presented at once and everybody would gladly sign it. This was tne second appeal to me to change my statement, and I regret very much Mr Cockfield's unfortunate position in the matter. J Ralston Casselman. Witness: CI Bragdon. l STATE OF SOUTH CAROLINA, county of williamsburg. Personally appeared before me Dr H M Graham, who, being duly j sworn, says: I was present and heard the above statement from Mr J Ralston Casselman in the foregoing paragraph and deposes and says that the ; above statements are true and correct. I Sworn to before me this 24th day of June, A D 1910. i / William S Lynch, Notary Public for S C. i And as further evidence to show ! the public generally that we are truthful and sincere in all our un; dertakings, beg to say that on Fri day, June iy, wnne maKing proiesj sional calls, accompanied by Dr H ; M Graham, in the presence of each ) other met Mr J R Casselman by the j roadside, this being after he had j been worried and bored to death by ; the frequent visitors, Cockfield, Mc! Cutchen and, later, Gaskms. I had learned of his visitors and knowing as much as I do in connection with j the attempt to get additional territory from Williamsburg county, , naturally felt I had an interest in i the matter and interviewed Mr Casselman. He said: "Yes, they have i been here last Monday and Tuesday, i caused me to lose considerable time from my work, trying to get me to j change that affidavit I gave you and | to give them one, but I refused to change anything." He further said: j "Why, they put questions to me like sj many lawyers. What I told you in the affidavit is correct, and I now confirm my first statement." There is only one way to cure i deafness, and that is by constitu! tional remedies. Deafness is caused by an inflamed condition of the mui cous lining of the Eustachian Tube, i When this tube is inflamed you have a rumbling sound or imperfect hearing, and when it is entirely closed, deafness is the result, and unless this inflammation can be taken out and this tube restored to its normal condition, hearing will be destroyed forever; nine cases out of ten are caused by catarrh, which is nothing but an inflamed condition of the mucous surfaces.
