"Stokes, of the Like City News, for his kind and complimentary reference to us as a possihlecandidate for the office of State Senator. It is an honor not to he lightly cast aside to lie deemed worthy by any considerable number of one's fellow-citizens?espe cially men ->f influence and sound judgment?to measure up to the requirements of this important and responsible office, which is really the highest office within the gift of the people of a county, and however slight might l>e our -chance of election were we seriously to enter the field, we do appreciate the assurances of support that have come to us from many of our county's l>est citizens. In publishing the foregoing we ask pardon for seeming egotism. It was not our intention to refer to Che matter editorially at all, hut in thanking our esteemed contemporary we feel that we owe equal consideration to the others jrho have urged our candidacy. Since the matter was first broached to us away last summer we have definitely and unequivocally declined to consider the question of being a candidate for this or any other office. Thpri- art> several reasons, any one of which we feel sure our friends would accept as sufficient excuse for not yielding to their flattering persuasion. These reasons, being wholly of a personal nature, we deem it neither needful nor becoming to recite them in print.; While on the subject we may sav that in our opinion this) county was never more greatly in need of strong men to represent: her interests in the (leneral As-1 sembly and we can ill afford to let jiersonal I das or prejudice influence us against choosing the most available men to meet the demands of the times. In ln?th branches of the Legislature we need the ablest and most progressive men to represent our county and Tiie Record stands pledged to lend its influence toward that end ?to supp >rt the men best qualified to serve us regardless of our personal likes or dislikes, or what part <>f the county they may happen to live in. The News & Courier reports the first cotton bloom from Lodge, Colleton county, which came from the farm of a negro named Richard Ayer. Former President Roosevelt is expected to arrive in New York from his African hunting trip next Saturday. Elaborate arrangements for welcoming him are being made. Robert Matthews, a negro, was killed in a swamp near Pensacola, Fla,Saturday by a posse of farmers for attempted assault on a twelve year-old white girl. The negro's body was riddled with bullets. Dave McGreer, colored, was shot and killed Saturday near Cokesbury by Pinckney Blackwell, a young col Dred boy. The dead negro went to I the home of the Blackwell boys to pick a fuss and they used their shotgun with deadly effect. Two young white men at Laure^, John M Wise and M C Tidwell, were arrested Saturday charged with the murder of Clarence White, whose body was found in a ditch by :he railroad track last January. Both :he accused are mill operatives. H H Evans of Newberry, former chairman of the State dispensary >oard of directors, was indicted Tueslay by the grand jury of Newberry :ounty.being charged with receiving ebates. The State's action in this :ase has caused somewhat of a sensa,ion. Twenty-four Democrats, in luding Congressman Wyatt Aiken, roted with the Republicans for the inal passage of the measure.
