- DILLONHANHAS BRAIN STORM. J H BETHEA KILLS TWO MEN ON PULLMAN CAR AND IS HIMSELF SLAIN. Wilmington, Del, March 23:?An exciting- battle, in which three men were killed, took place on a northbound Baltimore & Ohio Railroad train this afternoon. The fight be, gan at Newark, Del, and ended in this city. The dead: 0 E Well man, aged 40. >f Philadelphia, conductor of the train; Samuel Williams, aged 50, negro Pullman porter, whose home is said to have been in Jersey City, and J E Bethea. aged 40, of Dillon, S. C. The injured are: John 0 Wiley, aged 40, a park guard, of Wilmington, Del, shot in the hand and leg. Matthew Haley, a citizen of Wilmington, shot in the leg. Others were grazed by fixing bullets. The triple tragedy was the result of an altercation between Bethea, j who was a passenger, and Williams, I the w>rter, in the Pullman parlor car Mercury. The car was bound from Washington to Jersey City. Bethea, who had been drinking heavily, shot the porter through the heart, killing him instantly. When Conductor Wellman saw the porter fall he ran to the scene to remonstrate with the passenger. wh<5 still held the smoking revolver in his hand,andBethea fired a second shot into the negro's body. Then without a word, he shot Wellman through the heart. The conductor fell dead in his tracks. When Bethea fired, the conductor threw up his right arm to protect himself. The bullet struck his arm and continuing, ploughed through his body and lodged in his heart. Before the passengers could interfere the double murderer barricaded himself in the toilet room of the j Pullman car and threatened to kill the first person who approached. Meanwhile, the train reached Wilmington. When it came into the station, a hurry call was sent to t > the police station and a squad of patrolmen, ran to the scene. The police called upon Bethea to surrender. As an answer, he open ed the door of the toilet room a short distance and opened fire at the police and the crowd with an automatic revolver. Chief of Police Black, vfho also rushed to the railroad station, dodged behind an express office on the train floor just in time to escape several bullets. ^ Bethea is believed to have had at least 100 rounds of ammunition, for he succeeded in holding the posse at bay and also held up the train from 5.17 until 6.35. During this time many shots were fired 6n both sides until finally all the windows of the car were riddled. Travel over the Baltimore & Ohio Railroad was also tied up. When the battle had lasted about an hour, the police realized that they would be unable to drive the man from cover. A call was sent to a local fire company nearby. The fireman responded with their engine. Attaching a high pressure hose to a fire plug and with the firemen barricaded behind trucks and boards, a stream of water was played upon the windows of the toilet room. The man fired a number of shots at the firemen, but they wer not injured. Subsequently, Beth a, drenched with water, staggerer to the platform and the police once more called upon him to surrender. His reply was several shots in quick order from his revolver. Several! of the policemen had armed themselves with shotguns, and just as Bethea fired the last shot Police Captain Evans fired a load of shot into his face. Notwithstanding this injury, he kept on blazing away. Fatrolraan Boughman opened fire with a pistol and struck Bethea .n the right arm. The desperate man tried to fire again, but Sergt Kelleher opened fire and also managed to spring upon Bethea. I When the police took hold of him I I | he fell dead in the arms of a i patrolman. Wiley, the park guard, and Haley; are not seriously injurei. They) were both struck by stray bullets i I fired by Bethea. A tragic incidert of the affair was that when Williams, the porter, was shot he fell into a seat in the car. All through the battle the dead porter sat with the appearance of one looking from the window. Handsome Tapestry Work. Mr John Brown showed us recent-! The table cover is wrought in many shades of silk floss, and shows infinite patience and skill in its manufacture. It took Mr Brown three years at odd times to complete the work and the piece is valued at $75. Mr Brown eniisted in the navy from this county about six years ago and is quite enamored of a life on the ocean wave. His ship will soon sail for South America. EASTER WEDDINGS.
