Solicitor Stoll and Stengw^'-^&ipher Wood were present at the V^openiog hour and Judge Klugh aron r^le ^ 0'c'00^* tr tin. re* This being the lirst term of court $. for the year, Ills Honor made a for- i mal charge to the grand jury for Kglp" information and instruction.! ' His charge was lengthy and exhausIfS' tite, going over the duties of the ? grand jurors, collectively and indi? Tidtiallv, in minute detail, advising , and admonishing them with regard By v\ to the sat. redness of their duty, cor'*'i> , criug a period of about half an hour. } y Judge Klugh is regarded as one of I , the most scholarly Judges on the Sv , bench of oor State and his charges p were delivered in language chaste ? aad elegent, without losing strength ? r in expression. ^ At this term of court the three I cases that ^xcited greatest interest were the two in which the defendants were charged respectively with murder ;*nd rape, and the case of 1) E Motley, charged with breach of . trust with fraudulent -iuteut. The grand jurr returned true bills in all three of these cases and all were tig disposed of at this term. The case of Motley, which wasj called Monday afternoon, was cf ?; more thau ordinary interest. The ir Big AND WE HAY rntoH til ys glad to see you an . REDC t B88888E88888888888SS888 circumstances attending it have been ? 1 l * J - .1 given a great ueai or prroncicy anu are fresh in the public mind. Young Motley was assistant cashier of the liauk of Lake City aid in January, 1909, he left Lake City ostensibly to visit his parents in Danville, Va. Time passed and hi failed to return, and an examination if his accounts at the bank showed a shortage? then the reason of kit disappearance became manifest. \ An expert was called in,the book* checked up ai/d it was alleged by tht bank ollickils that the missing employee was responsible for a shortage o? neaily $10,000 ot the bank's money. Last fall, Motley was captured near Camden, X J, apd brought back here to jairl. A* facts arc so fresh before ?iw Jiwidtrs that; it is needless to go into details. It may be said that during Motley's sojourn in Lake City he bore an irreproachable character, and was about as popular as any young man in the town. His friends, while they deplored the crime he tfas charged with, pitied the young man, who is only twenty-four years old and of a very frail physique. The money that he spent, it is said, went largely in expensive gifts to those whom he liked and these friends no doubt felt bound to stand by him in hi3 trouble. These extenuating circumstances, together with the willingness of the prosecuting officer and the stockholders of the bank?who had suffered most by his defalcation?"tc temper justice with mercy," account for the surprisingly light sentence imposed upon Motley.
