Scran ton, May 2-">:?The first year's term of the graded school closed Friday, the 21st. The last j day's work was not interrupted by J any special exercise?. Friday uight, D(J L Mann delivered a splendid address on education at the Baptist: church. He was given an appreciative heariug by a well tilled house. Prof W L Bennett, principal of the school, and his assistant, Miss Helen Haddon, gave earnest and faithful ( service in the performance of their j duties. They left Monday morning! for their respective homes, carrying with them the hearty good wishes of their many friends for a pleasant j and profitable vacation. ^ A match game of baseball between k the Olanta and Scran ton teams was; L played on the local diamond SaturP day afternoon. The game was at-1 u tended by some unfortunate casual- J ties which marred tbe pleasure of! Lj^the contest. J>r C II Pate, an en-I PRhusi&stic baseballist, while pitching; for the Scrantou team, swung out his arm with such force that the ^^bone was suapped between the elbow and ehonlder. Dr Lynch adjusted the broken limb, which is doing Tery well. Corbet Baldwin received j bad cut on his forehead in aj Tu mble to gain a base. Our Harpers Correspondent Believes j Publicity Would Solve Vexed Problem. Editor Couuty Record: Your correspondent wishes to make a few remarks for the consideration of the overburdened taxpav- i pers of our county. We recommend i that the citizens of Williamsburgfi county be called iu a mass meeting i some time before next General As-11 sembly meets to ask our delegation j to enact a law providing for the !< publication in our county paper off: every tax return made in the couuty ] of Williamsburg in 1910 and each year thereafter. Then we will see i the property of our county go on the J tax books. Print each taxpayer's re* i turu separately. Taxes are a public obligation, so let the amount each ? man returns for this purpose be t made public. s Now, Mr Editor, I think if you ^ will take this matter up in your pa- l per and push it to the front, letting f our taxpayers see the justice aud e benetits to be derived from this method, it will be put in force by ( our lawmakers. Ti e pullication of t returns will have this effect: When i my neighbor fails to put his property on the tax book it is natural that I, c having returned all of my property, 1; would report to the township board t the shortage of my neighbor. In r tais way ttie scnooi tax woum ce o doubled, our schools would run 0 r and 8 months, and within two years v our levy could be considerably cut c down and all the taxes equitably paid, r I simply offer this for the cousidera- a tion of the readers of your paper and I would like to hear from some s other tax-payers 011 this subject. I j believe we need some relief from the J. present conditions of taxation. I t offer the above as a key to the relief. t The taxes from the increase of prop- 0 ;.-ty values will pay the expense of v mbiication more than twice. Let s -ne hear from you, Mr Taxpayer. ^ The excessive fall of rain has e caused considerable damage to crops a in this community. On the 20th r lust, about 0 o'clock p m, this com- r munitv was visited by one of the n heaviest rain-falls in several years. a Great damage has been done the oat crop. The writer has had several nnfe enf in the field for t CiLICO VI UUV vwww \.M? - _ the past 5 or C days. The people of this community have arranged for puttiug a suitable fence around their cemetery at Harmony church and otherwise beautifying the cemetery grounds. The fencing has been ordered and this work will be completed in a few days. We congratulate the people of this section upon this worthy act of taking special care of the restingplace of friends and loved ones who once lived and loved them.
