Tillman and Roosevelt. We have read carefully the available published reports of the Rooeevelt-Tillmau squabble, including Senator Tillman's speech in his own defense delivered in tke Senate last Tuesday. While the macbanical limitations of a county weekly newspaper prevent our giving a detailed account of the affair this week we hope in next week's issue of The Reo ord to publish a digest of the whole matter and we are trying to arrange to give our readers the , full text of SenatorTillman's speech. Our own opinion] is that the sensational attack of President Roosevelt will have but little effect upon the people of South Carolina, whether they be for or against Tillman. This -belief is confirmed by the alacrity with which the Legislature has passed its resolution praising Tillman's ! action. Whether or not the Senator's standing with bis colleagues in tha United States Senate and the people of the country at large j >ia .effected remains to be seen. At jest the position of Senator ( v Tillcnar. is not an enviable* [one | '* and even his most ardent admirers ? must admit that the affair lias added no lustre to his.J reputation ] as "the one honest \ man in the ( Seaate." ( The conclusion of th? whole matter hinge* on a question of yeradty. Those who believe unqualifiedly Senator Tillman when he declares that his motives were pure will exonerate him from ail blame other than a slight indiscretioa, while those who impugn his motives must believe him guilty of every count in the indictment. But as to the part played by i the President there will be in this i State but' small difference of opinI EViati.l Mild fop of Till- I l\JUf X 1IVIIU V...V, man agree that, in the circum- J state -djKoosevelt's espionage through , -Government spies upon the high- J est representative of a sovereign * I # State towards whom he felt a i personal enmity was an outrage against tMe United States Senate and the decent and fair-minded * ^ American people. The Frog in the Well. We are informed by the coun- i ty commissioner that there are outstanding claims against the * T ? ' ? road fund amountiug to $1,056.07 \ with no money to pay them. The same condition, as we understand it, existed two years ago, only the deficit was then about $12,000. The money was borrowed from the Sinking Fund to meet these \ claims and a special tax of one mill levied to pay the debt, two-) thirds of which is still unpaid, j Now it looks as though the legislature will have to be appealed to again to allow moremoney to be . ,5 .. > borrowed and more taxes levied : J to pay off the new indebtedness. , It begin^ to resemble the oldprob-j lem of the boy bt>y figuring the 1 frog out of the well when we try to calculate how long before the county will be out of debt ?^ ^- ?
