IMBROGLIO.
HOI THE MATTER IS REGARDED IN
WASHINGTON BEFORE SENATOR TILLMAN'S
SPEECH OF DEFENSE.

The first of the large White house
receptions took place Thursday night
when the President welcomed the diplomats
of all the nations represented
at to.e capital and hundreds of
guests invited to meet them. It is
customary at all of these receptions
to iaclude in the invitations all of
the members of congress aud among
those with whom the President shook
hand3 were a ftrge number who had
in their pockets notes of the ad
dresses to be made iriday excoriating
Mr Roosevelt for his Secret Service
message. It is presumed that
in the social relations the President
and the members of congress drop
all of their political differences and

than the President, who manages

of the amenities without making
guests feel the existing coolness

Senator Culberson of Texas introduced
a resolution in the Senate this
week denouncing the President's refusal
to impart information about the
consolidation of the Texas Coal and
Iron company by the Steel Trust as
\tu arbitrary and lawless act" and
tired another gun in the exciting battle
that is being waged against the
President in Congress. The speeches
in the lower house Friday were of a
similar character and it is rare that
the history of the country has shown
a parallel of such intense feeling in
the legislative body against the chief
executive. Meanwhile the President
goes tram.uilly about his business of
politics am' pleasure. He appears

week. He has accepted a position
as clerk with Hemingway
Bros., at Mingo Bridge.
Mrs Hattie Chinniss and
children of Lake City are the
guests of the former's parents,
Mr and Mrs W B Haselden.
It is to be remembered that
there will be services both
morning and evening the first
and third Sunday at Bethany
church during this year.
