THURSDAY, DEC. 3. 1908. Local News vs. General News. Said one of our subscribers recently: "I like your paper all ligut, only you don't give enough State and general news." It is a fact that we do not give much State and general news; we do not ... . ,. ? ?u aiiempi 10 uu so, as we uuuiu uut compete with other papers that cau supply double the quantity cf State aud general news at about half the price of The Record. No, we make a spec- ' ialty of local news. We try to 1 give our readers, week in, week ' out, what we can gather personal- j ly or get through our correspon- , dents, aud we may say without ; egotism that we do that fairly 1 well. 1 Look through the eolnmns [of J The Record this week, or any | week, and see how many sections of the county are represented, ? . - 1 how much news a single issue contains?not newfc abont far-off places and strange people, but j live topics within our own scope of observation and people Jwhom we kuovv personally. Of this par- ] ticular kind of news?Williams- ] burg county news?we say with- ? out auv fear of contradiction that i *Thk KkcORD contains niore by Ion? odds than all other news- ^ .papers combined. Local news, countv news. That - is the excuse for the existence of a county newspaper. If a man w&r.ts the news of the whole whole country let him lake a twice or thrice a week paper that wili keep him plentifully supplied. But for a county paper to fill its columns with remote happenings would defeat the very object of its existence. From a unique position among newspapers it would degenerate into a cheap imitation of the si mi weekly edition of a big daily. We could give our readers any amount of "foreign" news and at a small fiactiou of the cost of "home" news; in fact, we can buy it already set up iu plates or on "pateut iusides,'' but we believe that the vast mojority ap preciate the effort we are making , to give them a high class, all ] horn print newspaper, and al- 1 though the additional expendi- 1 ture of energy and cash required , has so far failed to meet with , adequate return, still we toil on, . content with little more than enough to pay ruuning expenses, 1 with the vagrant hope that some of these days our life work may he justly appraised aud rewarded, Mr C C Featherstone has announced his candidacy for Gover* nor in 1010. Mr Featherstone will doubtless make a strong candidate on the Prohibition ticket, but it seems rather early for a formal announcemeut for au election nearly two years distant. There is no telling how conditions may shape themselves in two years and Candidate Feather stone might have kept on "saw ing wood" for some time withou weakening his chances by pre crastination. More trouble at Ulemson! \V hoped that when a year ago abou half the corps of cadets wa dismissed it would tend to tightei up the discipline of the institu tion, but the trouble seems to b deep-rooted. This time the spiri of lawlessness took the concret form of hazing, in which i cadet from Florence was severel; bruised and otherwise maltreated and three cadets have been sus pended from the college as th< result. ! PROSPECT GRADED SCHOOL, j Leo, December 1:?Quite large crowd was in attendant last Friday night, November 25, at the Prospect school building and all report a good time and say that the occasion was thoroughly enjoyed by all present. The auditorium was taxed to its utmost capacity and many couldn't gain admittance and peered in as best they could From the outside. The weather was ideal and people from far md near took advantage of the fact and came. The crowd was the largest ,and most orderly jathering ever assembled in this community at a school entertainment. The exercises began promptly it eight o'clock and f? lours the audience enjo ollowing programme: 1. Welcome Song?by i adies. 2. "Train to Mauro," Cast of Characters: Mrs Buttermilk Miss Berry. Mr Bright Stanley Prosser. !ohnny, tbe bad boy,Leo Hanna. 3. Duet?Miss Fletcher and Miss Parker. 4. "John W Jones"?Recita :ion, by Miss Nina Porter. 5. "Thirty Years with a Shrew'' -Recitation, by Miss Bertha jawrence. fi. Instrumental Solo?Miss barker. 7. "The Irishman and the loon' ?Jesse Hanna King, the rishman, and Reese Gee, the loon. 8. "Somebody Lied'"?Bay nond X Speigner. 9. "That Rascal Pat'"?Play, Characters: dajor Puffjacket Mr Ileese Cockfield. Charles Livingstone?Mr Hubert Prosser. S'ancy (the maid)?Miss Parker. Laura (niece to major) Miss Fletcher. 1'at (the rascal) Raymond N Speigner. This play seemed to be enjoy?d immensely and made quite a :iit. It brings in the crusty old bachelor uncle and his niece who loves the handsome and dashing young Charles, who, however, lias no money, and then the blundering Irishman who makes mistakes and in trying to rectify Lhem involves himself in many humorous situations, out of which no one but Pat could extricate himself. In the end though everybody n^arries evorvhnHv else and thev live hap - J J pily forever afterwards. Alter the exercises all were iuvited to repair to the large hall upstairs where all kinds of things were in evidence. The large room was prettily decorated with moss, evergreens, holly and pot plants; several booths were arranged for the fruit stands and fish pond, while in the center a large space was cut off with ropes ol moss and here the oysters were served by the young ladies of the community; at the extreme end of the hall was arranged a balloting box where votes were % J - cast for the "prettiest g. . the "ugliest man," a cake being t the reward for the successful contestant. These cakes were certainly handsome and the coit tests proved very interesting. ' Indeed, in the "pretty girl" cone test alone 4005 votes were cast t and se.eral hundred for the s I "ugly man" The crowd did not disperse I until the early hours of morning " j and everyone carried away a p!_i 1 11 pieasctm lecuiicciiuii ui hie t time spent. e 'ihe proceeds will go to finish a payment on a piano and toward painting the school-building.
