The proposition to form Rut- I ledge county, which means prac- a tically the cutting in two of Williamsbuig. has assumed tangi- j ble form, and now is the time to speak or forever hold your { peace. That the matter is a serious one none will gaiusav. The mere $ - ? - ? 1 -A -c 1. or AAA statement ui iaut mat oc>,vvv people are affected is enough to give pause to precipitate thought _ and headlong action and it is but n just aud reasonable that the thing h be gone into carefully and thor- n oughly, without bias of passion or prejudice. g While this newspaper is oppos- ^ ed to the movement as unnkces- n sary and unwise, especially at d this time, our opposition is based S primarily upon the broad princi* ^ pie of greatest good to tne great- . est number, and in all that we e; say we shall try to present our ^ argument in a spirit of fairness tl and a decent respect for the n opinions of others who may see ^ fit to differ from our views. The V d editor of this newspaper is a citizen and taxpayer of Williams- ti burg county and in a sense a vv .public servant; tnerefore, he feels that he would be recreant to his o: duty did hej remain * silent jwhen ^ this gAve crisis is J confronting us. In expressing our views, gi however, due deference will be a given to the proprieties of such o discussion. We deprecate acrimonious personalities as vulgar and b debasing without adding one iota ^ to the force of an argument. d Abuse and vituperation are not t| - argument and to employ such ^ tactics is of itself a confession of J weakness, indicating a desire to L . v becloud or evade the issue. We want to be fair to all and as this is a matter that directly ^ " ti concerns every individual in the k three counties to be sliced, we I invite a full and free discussion n of the new county question s; through our columns, and prom- 0 ise to publish impartially all ,con- tributions germane to the subject, $ whether or not the views express- $ ed coincide with our ovn. ^ There are many people interest- | ed and necessarily there are va- ? rying opinions. Iu a multitude I of counsellors is wisdom ami nev- | er before in our county's history, | in our judgment, have we stood | in greater need of wise counsel? $ the outcome of the best minds $ among our people. The more we | have of intelligent discussion the | better informed will be the arbi- ? ters of the destiny of a county | beginning to take her place in the $ march of progress and whose nat- ? ural advantages are just now in- | $ viting investors and home-seekers. ^ The boundaries for the new ? county as set forth in the petitio.i 5) are published elsewhere in this is- ? sue. It behooves everyone con- | cerned to study them carefully in | cider to realize just what the pro- ? b . . osed ditui.mbertnent me'-ins; the| est step is to try to contrast pres-j nt Conditions with what would j ollow the formation of Rutledge ounty. From time to time, uutil he issue is decided, we shall preE-nt our views along this line. j State and General. | Typhoid fever lias broken out t Winthrop College.
