ANOTHER LETTER FROM POOR CONRAD'S PEN. HOMELY PHILOSOPHY AND WHOLESOME HOMILY SERVED IN SAVORY STYLE? ENTERPRISE SUGGESTED. Editor County Record:? I wrote some letters a while back to The Record, but was not pleased at them m)*self, which made * * i i tt 1 ine tninK 01 an oiu saying, -wueu conversing with another to consider first whether your friend would rather you to hear him talk or him to hear you." But I have met several of my old time friends and some I have not known Jong, and again 3ome who, I cannot call their names, want to know when they will see roy next letter. 1 feel myself very much flattered and will try and let my greatly appreciative friends hear from me again. I could say a good deal that I have no doubt would interest some of them, Sometimes I think I could go away back to my boyhood days to the place where I first saw the light, to the old "city by the sea,*' where I used to roam and wander, a fatherless and motherless, ragged, white-haired boy; sometimes on the oyster banks or in the mud hunting the marsh ben's nest, wading the tide-water creeks; sometimes yelling out with a huge sea-crab's claw fastened to my big toe; and again I would be seen on the dock9 or some tar projecting wharf and looking out towards the sea, on a 4th of July, lonesome and all alone with not a four-pence to buy a water-melon or a drink of soda water, listening to the chime bells of the old St Michael's church to the tune of, Jennette and Geno, ^'You are soiner far away, Far away from Poor Jennette. There's no one left to love me." ^li Editor, don't call me emotional, but I think it is good medicine to look away back and write about our tips and downs and in a way that will warm the old heart up and think of those we love that are present and those that have passed awav. until the heart overflows and w * warm tears drop down on the paper you are writing on. They are the kind of feelings I like to have some times. Writing is not a hard task if one teels that he will be interes" (\C aaiiwqa tfl. ?ill f vr t r\ a Ullg. \Jl tuuisi; nc an w j ?.v uv the best we can when we wish to please. I was in town on last Saturday and met some of my good ol-d friends, some who are of the legion. I don't mean that every body is my friend; I have enemies too, as the animals, the hsh and the fowls, and perhaps it is right for us to have enemies. The man who has enemies and goes to his home fp*?linor that there are some who are not turned against him?Poor Conrad has been all along there. Yes, call me "Poor Conrad." That takes me back to the dear oues that first gave me that humble name and I feel like I don't want to be any thing else. I am satisfied with that and do not wish to be any thing more than I am taken to be. I met a friend of mine some time ago in Kingstree, a minister of the Gospel, and he told me about reading my letter in The Record to his family and said it was one of Poor Conrad's letters and his little children heard him and asked: "Father, who is Poor Conrad, any how?" I s?ppos? he told what little he could about him. I am so very fond of children. I often say that I can trust children and dogs, V SP1 ! as they do uot know deceit. I am making my home at Mr J M l X ex sen's now and will be quite ! busv here until the cotton giuning J 3 3 season is over. The number of bales | ginned is between 900 and 1000 to j this date and we expect one or two 1 hundred more. I have named the place Eden but I don't think the name of Adam and Eve would be appropriate for Mr and Mrs Nexsen. I think they have more sense tha i our first parents. I have met many people and have learned the namea i of white and colored and all are friendly and polite. I have tried to do my duty towards Mr Nexsen and his patrons at the ginnery and have used my best efforts to protect , both him and his customers. Mr Nexsen is trying to be a little more strict in delivering cotton after it ginned, as last year and also this season cotton has been hauled by parties through mistake and in our trying to pievent it to occur again some may not like to be rL mf to produce a written order fu .. Mr Nexsen before I will deliver their cotton. If any have had their feelings hurt by that way uf doing business it was not intended that way and explanation and reasons will be cheerfully given. This is my second term at this ginnery. I see poor Mr John Tharpe sometimes. He was here last season with cotton to gin and could help to feed the cotton to the elevator, but since that time he has been stricken and cau scarcely get around. I want to visit my old friend, Mr George Mitchum, who * + *1 i I 1 .L j lives a lew nines oeiow nere, as soon as I can make it suit. This road is quite a thoroughfare; more travel I think than any road leading out of Kingstree. A telephone line is to be put up soon; the poles are being hauled along the route already. I am quite glad to see it, for it is much needed aud I hope this part of Williamsburg will keep up with the times. I do really believe that if the power could be had at Kingstree a trolley car here would pay. If Kingstree could get an ice factory and electric lights with a power plant to run a car line from Kingstree to Luke City aud one from Kingstree to Cooper Bros, it would be a tine thing. Seems to me that Kiugstree and Lake City could unite and build such an enterprise. They hare money enough. All that is wanted is push and energv. Well, Mr Editor, you as well as a good many others, when you meet me, ask me how is the boat, and so I will say something about the boat. It will be a little lengthy to tell and explain why and wherefore such and such is the case. First of last year I did not make much by the boat. A good many were afraid to ride for fear it would sink and drown all on board; and, again. i some had heard that gasoline was a | powerful explosive and if fire got to it al! would be blown to the four winds, ! but by degrees they are getting to believe that the boat is no more dangerous than the steam car or horse and buggy and not near so dangerous 1 as the terrible automobile. But last I yea; Mr Johu Xexseu was so well pleased with my services that he asked me to come back and attend to his , ginnery again, and, according to my promise, here I am. And then about the boat again, I ordered a new paddle wheel outfit for my boat so I could run in shallow water moie than I could with the propeller ' wheel that works under the boat and ' draws at least two feet more of wa ECI _ GOING C A1 S. MA ter than the paddle wheel, but unfortunately the parties troin whom Ij ordered the paddle wheels sent rue j left hand machinery, when I should; have right hand, which makes it of' i no use to me at all and has caused | me a loss of several hundred dollars : besides the change I have made in ' my boat, from which cause it is uow ' completely disabled. But hold ou, j Mr Editor and County Klcokd! friends, if Poor Conrad li^^fewj more mouths the Mercede.- rill be ! herself again or then s' other' name.
