Expose the Grafters. The New York World has unearthed a scandal anent the Panama canal matter that is calculated to make the Republican administration sit np and take notice. After the Panama route for the canal had been decided % on the United States government paid $40,000,000 for the property & rights of the French canal U.wl Kami .1 ^CUUipany mat uuu wguu ?n work of constructing the canal aud the present route is practically the same as that projected by the French company. Now The World charges, and apparently with good authority, that the amount paid the French I capitalists who controlled the old canal route was only about one-.tentii the enormous purchase price charged the government, the difference going to American speculators who had bought up most of the stock for a mere song frpm the disheartened and distrusted original .promoters of the enterprise. But the ugliest feature of the case is the fact that the syudiate that bought up the French company's stock was composed of a number ot prominent Republicans who are very close to the administration and who knew, so to spfak, just how the cat would jump. For in** stance, among the principal stockholders of the American syndicate were Douglas Robinson, a brotherin-law of President Roosevelt; * Charles P. Taft, a brother of r> Roosevelt's big understudy for the leading role in national politics. Add to this the fact that . Presideut Roosevelt was an ardent advocate of the Panama route for the canal in preference to the icaragau route to ouougij urged by the late Senator Morgan of Alabama, and it gives color to the suspicion that if the incorruptible Roosevelt himself did not profit by the transaction, members of his family and his personal friends and political allies did feather| their nests at the expense of the I'nited States government. The scheme of gigantic speculation was a verv attractive one * and in view of the attending circumstances the element of risk was reduced to a minimum. The eminent English^ attorney employed by The World, to investigate the affair, in submitting his report, uses the following ^language: S ! "I have never known in my lengthy [ experience of company matters, any i public corporation, much less one of | such vast importance, having so [completely disappeared and removed all traces of its existence as the new (the American) I'anauia Canal Company.'' Having paid the Frenchmen about $3,500,000 for property | they sold to the United States government for $40,000,000 the beneficiaries immediately proceeded to cover up their tracks and the only present source of enj lighteninent is the official record ! in the archives at Washington. The people of the United States have the right to demand the production of the records affecting this gigantic scheme of graft and the exposure of the gang of conspirators who, backed by powerful political influence, carried out successfully ; their audacious scheme whereby the people of the United States were mulcted to the tune of ovei $30,000,000. Turn ?on the light,"Mr Roosevelt, and let the public J have the facts before the election. That Balloon Story. The "balloon"' story from Kings-' tree which was featured iu the Columbia State and enlarged upon in tne Floreuce Times was a hoax, pure and simple. Some of the boys sent up a couple of toy balloons Tuesda; and the sight of one of these w* probably the foundation for "special.'' For Kingstree to be in the orbit of a real, sure enough airship would be an excellent advertise4 tnent, but pleasiug fancy must sometimes be sacrificed to prosaic fact. The anneal for heln for the flood i r 1 sufferers, which we publish this week, is one that should touch our hearts. The condnions described are not overdrawn; indeed, from other sources we learn that some of the families are in a pitiable plight. These are not famine-stricken sufI ferers in far-off India, but our own people, our neighbors. This condition of distress has come upon them through no fault of their own, but through Providential dispensation. Many of us are willing to give to a worthy cause, but we do not think about it, or it is not convenient to , do so. We shall take pleasure in forwarding every cent left with us and '< the names aud the amounts of those who contribute will be published. Clothes and provisions may be sent direct to the committee, whose names are appended to the article ' published elsewhere in this paper. ????
