I IV ? 1 Of all the Novelty I of Drab. Dark Forest. Gr; SCENE OF MURDER UNDER MARTIAL LAW. fiOV. PATTEKSUN IS MAIUNU tltK!; EFFORT to PUNiSH TENNESSEE MURDERERS KM PHIS, Ten u., October Uo: ? Tomorrow, with the convening of the court for Ohio c>untj in special session at Union City to investigate the death cf Quentiu Rankin, who was killed by a "night-rider" band in the vicinity of Reelfoot lake last Mor.day night, that region will be under the complete domination of military rule. Five companies of the Stata National Guard will be at the disposal of Col Tatom to enforce martial law, and it is purposed to gather in every member of the band, i To aid the militia, the adjoining ' conn ties have been drawn on for]1 ( Armed bands of picked men. Should this this force be inadequate ( to cope with the situation, it is < declared that ttie eutire military i force of the State will be concentrated if necessary. In the lieelfoot lake region, the ( lake itself is the source ot contention ( which brought fourth the activity of the night rider organization. It was ( oon tended bv those living near the o ( 2ake that it was their right to ply their vocation as tishermen in its i waters without molestation, while the owner of the land on the shores of the lake took an opposite view, in the courts the latter, the Western , Tennessee Land company, of which C'apt Rankin and Col R Z Taylor of Trenton were the orgaui/.ers, was upheld. Tien ensued night-rider warnings* threatening death to those whoopposed the wishes of the members of the band. It was on the first visit to the lake region in many months that Capt Rankin was killed. Men connected with or supporting the laDdowneis have been forced to leave their homes, and others, who refused to obey the warnings, were punished corporally. Notwithstanding the efforts of the local officers the depredations continued for a year. The situation became more " i ail and more ana more serious, uum, with the killing of Capt Kankin, it proved neccessary for the State officers to act from Nashville. Two companies of troops were sent forward the day following the lynch-) iug and Gov Patterson went to the .scene to direct the work of ferreting out the members of the mob. Two other military companies went from Memphis. Of a number of men arrested 10 are held and it f is promised that when the grand i jury is convened tomorrow sufficient; evidence will be furnished to bring1 about the indictment of every mem- ! ber of the night-rider organization.' The court will be under the pro-i tection of a company of milita that will be sent from Nashville to- j morrow. Governors of several States have approved of a suggestion of Govi Patterson that a conference of the executives of the different States be held and plaus devised whereby they -can act in concert in an effort to destroy night-rider organizations. Go? Noel of Mississippi, Gov , Pindallof Arkansas and Gov Willson . of Kentucky have already expressed ( themselves in approval of the pro .THE ( IEW 5atterns we have never seen in MI iy, Brown and Black. These are <3 posed conference. FIFTY ONE MORE AR- ' RESTED Forty-four more prisoners, including two women, were brought in to ( day to Reel Foot Lake as a result of the murder at Walnut Log last week of Capt Quenten Rankin by masekd night-riders. In addition, seven ( others, including one woman, were < arrested by the troops, but paroled. < Among those arrested are William J Pratt, hotel keeper at Samburg; J D j F Carpenter, Union City, attorney, s who Col Taylor charges wrote letters [ to Taylor and Rankin which were < instrumental in carrying them on \ the fatal trip to Walnut Log; Wm ( Brewer, a sixty-year-old faimer, his j wife and sou. Aside from the ar- < * rests, the day passed quietly with * the troops in the disturbed region, c ? ?r The Youth's Companion for 1909.
