GOUASKELL SUES W. R. HEARST FOR SLANDER. SHERIFF BREAKS DOOR OF PRIVATE OAR TO SERVE PAPERS ON MILLIONAIRE EDITOR. Omaha, Neb., October IS:--After: a .1.... niutl.1 C..JI.U .11, I'?lil?ll I a uiatunuv ov\nv vn v ...... , , Train No 2 last midnight William Randolph Hearst, the millionaire editor, was served with papers notifying him mat suit for ?(500.000 had been brought against him for slander and libel by (iovernor Chas j N Haskell, of Oklahoma, in the Douglass conntv, Nebraska, district court. The summons was served by Deputy Sheriff Stewart, for Smith & Smith, of Omaha who are Governor Haskell's alorneys in the damage suit. Mrs Hearst stated that her husband was not in the rooms, but had gone to the station to send a telegram. The deputy sheriff demanded admittance in the name of the law, threatening to break down the door. Mrs Hearst, on the inside, creamed out that she was alone -and would admit no man, and the deputy proceeded to carry out bis threat. Using hia shoulders as a battering ram, he crushed through the door and was met bv Mrs Hearst, partially - - disrobed, apparently oil the verge of hysterics. She rushed screaming through ? ? the door, out in the aisle. The deputy snertff sturted to kick the door of the toilet room adjoining. Then Mr Hearst, trembling and ex Cited, emerged and accepted the papers. To a reporter Mr Hearst said that the summons was entirely unexpected. He said lie refused admitUnce to the officer because he uud his wife were retiring for the night. "J have no objection to being 6frved with th.se papers," he said. "Frankly, I don't believe this case will ever come to a trial. When Governor Hxskell said uot very long ago that his only reason for not bringing ac tion against nie was his lack of funds I offered'to donate the necessary amount from my own pocket and this offer still holds good.''
