t FARMERS MADE MIS- ' TAKE, SAYS SMITH. SHOULD HAVE FILED IINIIUI PRICE 1 OF COITON IT TVENTY 08 TturiiTif nirr rrirrc menu-rife lehio. Spartanburg, September 19. , ^Special:?A crowd that taied the 1 court house was present this morn- ' ^ ^~lns/*'"NN?sponse to the call of Presi- ' ' dent E L Archer, of the Cotton association. Resolutions were passed j condemning so-called "night riding," 1 as practiced in some of the Western * cotton States, recommending that no cotton should be sold at this time for Jess than ten cents per pound, and hue addresses were delivered bv Mr E I> Smith, the Democratic ??">!"" f'-v- rTnitoil States senator. UUUUiUTCi IV. VU*?VV? and the Hon C C Moore, president of the North Carolina Cotton association. The meeting was a hearty Bp and enthusiastic oue, and the speak. ers were liberally cheered. Mr Smith i jf * l^threw his old time energy and en* thusiasm into his talk aud several times evoked tremendous applause, laughter and cheering. Mr Moore j interspersed his talk with many wit-; ty stories and illustrations, using them to drive home his points effectively. The following resolutions condemning night riding in Mississippi i were unanimously passed: "Resolved further, That we, as farmers, have nothing to do whatsoever with any conduct or effort to interfere with the ] natural rights of the individual do ing whatsoever he pleases with his | cotton or any other prodnct of the f land. And we denounce any and all < acts by known or unknown parties intended to intimidate any person from managing or disposing of bis cotton or other products of the farm as he, in his judgment, shall deem expedient. I "Resolved further, That we, as ^^HHirmers and business men, will lend j^H^Bur zealous assistance to the police |^^B*thorities of this or any other State BB bring any such violators of the * before the criminal courts, and |^^Kud in their conviction and snch pun* ishment as the law may provide". On motion of Dr S T D Lancaster, a resolution was paseed recommending that no cotton be sold at this time for less than ten cents. After the business had betn concluded Mr C C Moore was introdu- i oed. He opened by referring in eomplimentary terms to Mr E D ' Smith, and when he said, that the , people of South Carolina had done ' well by sending him to the United y States Senate, he was applauded. The people of South Carolina, the Cx speaker said, had sent Mr Smith 1 where he would be a power. The Southern Cotton association, he said, was the voice of the South in protest against the low price of cottrm Tlifl fnrmara aro nnv lcppnincr books to show the cost of raising > cotton, and that it coold not be raised at a profit with the staple selling at nine cents the pound. He referred to the time when cotton sold at 4.60c, and said such times would return unless the speculators j are stopped in their work. Mr Moore j advised the farmers to deposit their J cotton checks in the bank and pay i their debts by clieck. Money car- i ried in the pocket or hid away at > home is withdrawn from circulation. ? I Mr E D Smith was greeted with ' * great applause. He said he was J glad that the people of Spartanburg 1 are still interested in cotton. Re- j ferringtohis election, he thanked ? the people for their handsome vote. He spoke of the great development of the country, which has increased the demand for cotton, which is j than ever before. The present sitnation, he said, ought to bring the a blush of shame on the face of every ^ farmer. He asked the question, who was Mr Heater and who was on the reporting board at Washington? The speaker said he wanted to serve notice to the world that he is going to fight for the farmers. He said the farmers made a mistake when they fixed the price of cotton at 15 cents; that they should hare fixed the price at 20 or 25 cents. He explained the practice of mill "hedging," and told of the danger in the grading, which pnt future y cottou "200 points less than spot. Congress should pass laws to stop it He would, if it could be done, have the department of agriculture report on the number of bales carried in the ware houses so that the farmers could know.
