It seems strange for a road to have ;i history, doesn't it!"' Well, this particular road has a history of a peculiar kind. I will not go back to the war, nor even a decade, but will give a brief history of it from June 1 1U07, to the present day. This road was in fairly good condition up to that time. About the Qrst of June the chaingang came along and hurriedly dug a ditch on the side of the road opposite the natural course of the water and threw the mud in the road. Then it hurried off for other parts of the county. And, dear readers, you can imagine the condition of this highway of a p-erless county of a commonwealth second to none in the union. This mud that was thrown in the road would bog a duck and would stall the strongest horses. Naturally snough that road became impassable ind travelers were forced to go three miles out of their way. It remained in this condition until this spring, when some good road fixer came and ievasted a whole forest of pine timber and put in the road in the way of rails. They are called "punchings," but the proper name for them is joltings. For three quarters of a mile there is nothing but one long jolt. This is a good road to mak e a milk shake, but it is not fit for people to ride over, especially the ladies. 1 have known many instances in which weak, unwell ladies have had to get out of their carriages and walk over this fine specimen )f a road running through a civilized lountry. "The offence is rank, it imells to heaven," is what every one :hinks as he passes over this road, rhis may be strange language but ndeed it is true, and it is a pity that it is true. It is needless for me to identify this road to the travelers, but for the benefit of these who stay at home >r do not pass over this misserable back-breaker, I will say that it is the road from Rome postoftice to Union jhurch. [ cannot vote and am not at all interested in politics, but as an observing citizen of old Williamsburg I make these criticisms in hopes they ,vill be looked into by the proper Authorities. liOMAXl'S ClVIS. 1 Announcement Having removed my business into one of the new brick stores near the railroad I bejj to offer a select line of Jewelry, Clocks, Watches " * - - ? t i i Silver ware ana uoid and Silver Novelties. : : :| Also watch and c 1 o c k r e pair work done on short noi ice at com pet in.* prices.
