A PEN PICTURE OF
PRESIDENT ROOSEVELT.
%
ONE OF THE FINEST CHARACTER
SKETCHES OF THE ROUGH RIDER
PRESIDENT EVER PENNED.
One of the most entertainiug aud
forceful speeches of the present sesnf
n.in<rrDOO U'oc th?lt nf Mnn
CIVU v/t WU^UOO ?? (to VUUV V*. xxvut
Jack Beall of Texas, delivered while
the Agricultural bill was pending
and just prior to the filibuster. In
concluding his speech he drew a
striking picture of the president,
which fairly brought down the
house, both Democrats and Republicans
joining in with the spectators
iu applause. In speaking of
the present occupant of the White
House, Mr Beall said: ,
The next breeze that comes from i
the White House will probably i
tiring the message that if this con- ,
gre?sdoes not bow in willing obed- (
dence to his demand for four battle- j
ships, he will veto measures providing
for public buildings or for the ,
improvement of rivers and harbors. s
Now, Mr. Chairman, I am not |
one of those who regard the slight- (
est utterauce of the president as
pracular in its wisdom, nor am I one \
of those .who would deprive him of j
all credit for the virtues he may ]
possess. He sometimes does good |
things in a way to make them look
\ had, and he sometimes does bad s
things in a way to make them look |
" :41 .
goou. lie sometimes iuiuks wuuuui !
acting, and oftentimes acts without
thinking. #( Laughter and applause.) \
He is sometimes right and some- (
times wrong, but always .pictur- f
es<jue. 1
S He is patriotic euough to seize occasionally
upon some of the policies ]
-of his political opponents and use .
Them to his country's good, and ]
sometimes paitizan enough tooling |
to the policies of his own to his
country's harm. I
lie is the apostle of simplicity. |
lie believes in the simple life and j
simplified spelling. |
He is ambidextrous, lie wields
the "big stick'1 in one hand and a i
fountain pen in the other and ere- <
ates equal havoc with each. (Laugh- j
ter and applause.) (
\\ hen he gets into acnou ms em* i
mies are 111 danger and his friends
are in peril. '(Laughter and applause.)
He is tickle in his affections? In ,
11)04 the name of llarriman in the
code book of the White House was
"Donation." In l'JOS it is "Damnation."
(Laughter and upplaues.)
He is a broncho buster and a trust
buster, the difference being that
when he breaks a broncho he blindfolds
the horse, and when he attempts
to "bust" a trust he blindfolds
himself. (Laughter and applause.
He is a nature student, lie has
counted all the stripes around the
body of a mountain lion, but he has
never seen a stripe on one of the
trust magnates.
He is a great hunter, lie can
draw the finest bead on a bobcat, hut j
he can not get a sight on the constitution.
( Laughter and applause ),
lie is progressive. For years lie'
chased the bears, and now he is
chasing both the "bulls" and the
"bears."
"lie is trusting. He took 'In < iod
\\e Trust' from the coin* and tlnn
trusted two hundred million of than
to the banks in New York. I Laugh-'
ter and applause, i
"He is a contradiction. Fit de9

claims against race suicide, but he 1
insists on keeping the tariff 0:1 safety
pins and baby buggies. (Laughter
and applause.)
"He cultivates the artistic. He
whitewashed Paul Morton and is
now frescoing the reactionaries with
a tint of "Slue. He is per verse.
He was given the vice-presidency in
the hope that he would bury himself,
but has constantly refused to;
deport himself as a well disposed;
corpse should. \i

color blind about lunch time.
(Laughter and applause.)
"In the South he has more adnurers
than supporters and in the
North he has more supporters than r
admirers. (Laughter and applau3e.) 1
He can make a noise like a politiciati.
He discharged the colored
trooj) of soldiers in an off year, when
they committed murder, and now re- 6
scmmeuds their restoration in an
Section year. (Laughter and applause
on the Democratic side.)
"He is generous. Given the power,
with the advice and consent of the
c
jenate to nuAe treaties, he is willing
:o relieve this body of its onerous ^
Inty and do it all himself.
"He is a magician. He can traus:orm
our Uncle Joe, who is a roar
ng lion in the house, into a purring
litten in the White House. (Laugh- a
erai.il applause.)
''He is sympathetic. When he
sees the Senate suffering from ennui ^
ie gives it diversion by permitting ^
t to eat out of his hand.
"lie\s considerate. He permits
:he Supreme Court to construe a part
if the laws a part of the time, instead
of himself construing all the .
?. x
aws all the time.
0
"He is the Sandow of the country,
fie can hold the Senate in one hand
v
md the House in the other and keep
# c
L)otli of them in the air most of the ^
:ime. (Renewed laughter.)
' He is a patriot. Realizing from j
past observations that his party of- ^
Centimes makes mistakes in nominating
its candidate for the presidency, j
tie is seeking to relieve it of that .

nomination himself. He is the ^
strongest combination of wisdom and
folly, of honesty and rashness, and
Df the spectacular and the grotesque ^
that this Republic ever saw, and just
what niche he is to occupy in the *
temple ot his country's history God
and the future alone can tell. (Prog
longed applause.) Fike.
That languid, lifeless feeling that
comes with spring and early sum 5
mer, can be. quickly changed to a 1
feeling of buoyancy and energy by i
the judicious use of Dr Shoop's Restorative.
The Restorative is a j
genuine tonic to tired, rundown
no.*rea and hnt :i few doses are needed I C
to satisfy the user that Dr Shoop's d
Restorative is actually reaching that (
tired spot. Tne indoor life of win- a
ter nearly always leads to sluggish y
bowels, and to sluggish circulation
in general. The customary lack of j
exercise and outdoor air ties up thej t
liver, stagnates the kidneys, and oft-1
times weakens the Heart's action.
Use Dr Shoop's Restorative a few
weeks and all will be changed. A
few days test will tell you that vou i
are using the right remedy. You
will easily and surely note the }
chang efrom dav to dav. Sold bv
