I We think too much of our Lake City friends to let them go without a struggle. We are making no tight against our Lake City friends. We are merely on the defensive. It is our honest opiniou that taxes would be higher in the new county than in the old, but then ours would be high enough, in all conscience* Did you notice that your taxes last year were consiueraoiy oigneri than the year before? How would yon like to have them doubled this year? If you don't know how you feel on the subject vote for Rutledge county and the tingling of yonr pocket book nerve will soon tell you. In stating that Clarendon couuty would issue bonds for $50,000 to build a court house, and that Sointer had recently completed a court house at a cost of $75,000, we are informed that our figures were wrong. Clarendon proposes to build a court house to cost 160,000 and Sumter's elegant temple of justice taxed the people $125,000. Building comes high these days. What kind of court house and jail could be built for $8,000? Numerous complaints have been received from subscribers all over the county who do not get their papers regularly. Of course we are sorry, as a man is entitled to what be pays for; but when we print the paper and put it in the postoffice, that is the limit of our ability. "We may say, however, that this condition obtains with every country newspaper that 4 we ever heard of. It is impossible to get the paper to every wbscriber every week. We are doing our best and if any one thinks he could take our job and , do better, we will relinquish it to ( i and furnish Will a ff liVl^ U1VUVU HUM him the outfit free, if at the end of a month he will tell us that there has not been a single complaint from the patrons of the paper. j I More Taxes? Governor Ansel, in his message to the legislature, recommendf an increased levy of two mills to put the State on a cash basis. He also recommends an in- crease of salary for each State official. Every county official in the State is appealing (and justly , so) for a better salary. And yet , our Rutledge county friends say in all serion8ness that to cut Williamsburg county in half? which they propose to do?would not increase taxes. Run two county governments at the price of one? The idea is absurd. Just as well gay tbat one and | ooe njiike one. Talk is cheat), but be not de- j ceived. Read the signs of the times and ponder well before voting an additional burden to an ? I already tax-ridden county. Various and sundry rumors have been lieai(I regarding the attitude of Johnsonvil'e toward the, new county scheme, but now a!! doilhtg Si- 'U) to he s-t at l'e>t. ', by voting themselves into lluMedgv county, with no practical advantage to tln-ii community. The meeting hold last Thursday sheas how John o-'viHe stands and a good, strong vote will be roiled up on election day against Rutledge county. The! people are getting their eyes op-j en and we are of the opinion j that Rutledge county will have a "long stumpy road"' to travel before it ever comes into existence. %* A Utiina ?are cops auu wutcie toilet sets, salad bowlg, cake plates, etc., high quality and low price, at People's Mercantile Cos.
