4 = A TRIP TO THE JAMESTOWN EXPOSITION. THE SHOW GOOD BUT EXTRAVAGANT CHAKGES PREVAIL?TWELVE ACRES TOBACCO NET $1,725. Editor County Record:?After a pleasant outing for two weeks up in the hills of Virginia and three days at the Jamestown exposition, I thought I would let you arid the public know that I am back at the old stand, eating three meals a day and sleeping well at night. Well, what I have seen is more than I can tell. One thing I am more thourgbly convinced of than ever before. That is hat Eastern South Carolina is the best place I have ever found for the farmer, and when the farmer is prosperous, you know the rest. Well, I found the crops in Virginia not half so good as in South Carolina?that is, corn and tobacco. That's about all I saw. Crops there 6eem to have 6ufered for rain, al60 the fruit crop is very poor, on account of the late, cool spring, and I tind the labor question much more serious there than here, the lady folks doing all their domestic work themselves and the men theirs. Well, after a week's stay in the Piedmont eating light-bread, butter- milk, etc., I began to feel like starting out for the James XOWn exposition, <tnu iu cuuijjany with a few of those beautiful Virginia girls, we boarded the train at News ferry, a few miles e?st of Danville, and found a train of eigh fc coaches tilled to its fullest seating capacity, all bound for Norfolk and the Ex/ position. Oh! how I wished I could have called back about 25 years. So .far as my looks I could have passed off all o. k., but alas! I had my daughter along and, she would call me papa. But on we went winding around those hills at a lively rate, and while in conversation with a gentleman on board about those hills, he said, "Why these are no hills, you just ought i ? to be up where I live. Why when we get after a squirrel up there he never runs up a tree to get away from you, but always runs down the tree/' I said, "Well, a new idea for me should I ever go to the mountains squirrel hunting." After six hours run we came in sight of the famous old city of Richmond ( and soon we were safely landed at the Southern depot, but quickly transferred to the Chesapeake & Ohio and sent on our way rejoicing at the rate of a- j bout 60 miles an hour, and at 7:30 rearhed Newnnrt News. SteD ping off the cars right on to the ferry boat, one of the most beautiful I have ever seen, tive minutes after getting off the cars we were steaming along on the waters of Chesapeake bay. Our first stop was at the Exposition grounds for about 30 minutes, thence around to Norfolk and our host was there waiting on the wharf to take us to our resting place. Well, after a good night's rest and plenty of refreshments, I felt like taking in the sights of the exposition. So by hanging to the side of a street car I was soon landed at the gate of entrance got my pass and entered and I was only on the grounds a short while before I began to realize that the admission fee was not all it cost a man to see the sights. Let me say right here, I think every thing unreasonably high on the lair grounds and also in Norfolk, 25 cents for a shave, 25 cents for a boy to carry your grip down to the boat, and a fellow that is as timid and has as poor an appetite as I do, it will take $1.50 to give him a square meal, and what about such men as John T. and J J Eaddy and W H Harmon? Oh my) $5 at least. Well, the exposi|nai^^^ good, 1 think worth.^^^^^IRried to take in all I could in the limited time I j ; had and am pleased with all 11 saw, and now to you young men ! of Williamsburg let me say I was very much pleased with the Snnth Carolina exhibit. There is none better and everywhere I went in the State of Virginia 1 heard,"don't fail to see the South Carolinae xhibit; it's the best of all.*' Now, what I want to impress upon you is that there is i do place in these United States , better than South Carolina. '' Content yourselves, get an edu-1 cation, settle down and apply it to the development of the various industries and be happy and wealthy. And, now Mr Editor, but for one thing I would stop right here; for 1 hav'nt got all the 1 cinders out of my eyes yet: Your Lake City correspondent made mention of my old friend, H .1 Williamson's 5 1-2 acres of tobacco weighing 1400 lbs per acre and bringing a net average of $140 per acre. I can't yield the cake to my old friend Williamson. 1 sold 17,000 lbs from 12 acres, a clear check for $143.78 per acre. Their food may satisfy the appetite but it fails to nourish the body simply because the stomach is not in fit : condition to do the work it is sup1 posed to do. It can't digest the food you eat.
