[NEWSY LETTER FROM THE LITTLE BATE CITE HEW MAYOR INSTALLED-DISTRICT COMFERENCE CLOSES?NEW DEPOT ?A CASE OF "BRAN STORM." Florence. May 21:?Well, the weather continue? pretty hot and the local ice market is doing a rushing business. Mr H K Gilbert, the newly elected mayor of our city, assumed charge of his office last week. Mi Gilbert ? is a man in whom the people of the city have a great deal of confidence and it is believed that he will make the town a worthy chief executive. Mrs P M Brockinton of Kingstree spent last week m the city visiting relatives. Mr W B Gregg, who is well known in Williamsburg, is the proiul father of a hue son. The voung stranger arrived a few days ago at his home on Palmetto street. The Florence District Coutereuce of the Methodist church closed here Sunday. The session was largely attended by ministers and other officials from all over the district. It is said that the Atlantic Coast Line Railroad has completed all arlangements for the bnildinr of the new depot at this place, but when the building will actually be started nobody knows. The new depot a- -J Tk. all,,.. 18 grenuy HWUt-U. illC uaicrii^ public certainly knows of the poor acomroodations the)e are at this place and it will be good news to every body who travels through Florence by rail to know of some improvement contemplated. Mr P C Hatchell, a well known mechanic who was iti the employ of the Coast Line as pump inspector, died iu the infirmary here late Sun day afternoon as the result of a stroke of paralysis which he suffered the day before. Mr Hatchell's home I was near Effingham where his re I mains were carried lor ouriai. ne was the inventor of the ''Hatchell plow," which is being used by several of the farmers of Williamsburg county uow. Farmers 111 this section all report very good crops, especially tobacco If the weather continues favorable for the next few weeks, the golden wml w>ll begin to come into the market. The tobacco market will likely be better this year than it lus ever been in the city as several new - ? - 11 ?. 1 tooncco men nave moveu ncre ?uu have had a good deal of experience in the business and they propose to put the market on a boom. ^ Mr C A Buchheit, a well known citizen of this city, who has conducted" a bakery on Dargau street here for several years, was seriously cut one day last week. Mr Buchheit did it himself and how he came to do so he was unable to explain when taken to the city hall by the police. He seemed to have gotten enraged over some trouble which he had some time ago and as the result drove his fist through a glass door and also through a glass window inflicting a severe wound. Medical attention was secured as ? ? - - i L. : quiCKiy as possiuie aim -ur la improving somewhat now. Work is soon to s'art on the new hospital here, which will be owned and operated by a slock company, mostly of physicians. This will be the second hospital for Florence. W. M. S. Lines From Lane. Lank, May 20:?Mr Editor, I will give you a few dots from this place. There was a festival here last Tuesday night given for the benefit of the Baptist church. The proB cerds amounted to about ?23.?0. B We think they did well, for the at teiiylance was small. S Mr-1 L Cunningham has given H "Cordon House" to Mrs S A H Nettles. We wish the new proprieB tress much success. Efi A tine dance was given last Fri dav night at the L ine hotel. There S was a good crowd of young folks 8H present, \iho seemed to enjoy the ocS9 casiou. We are looking forward to another dance to be given soon. Blue Eyes. I AFFAIRS REPORTED [ | FROM LAKE CITY.; TWO LADS NARROWLV ESCAPE DEATHREVIEW OF CROP CONDITIONS-LOCAL AND PERSONAL ITEMS. i Lake Cit\. Mav 21:?Mr Hen J ry L Covington of Pensacola, Fla.. was here this week visiting relatives and friends. | i Monday evening a horrible tragedy was averted by the veriest accident. Beverly Jones, the young son of Mr B Wallace Jones, and Edgar Haselden. both boys of twelve, years, attempted to cross the railroad track in front of the fast muii which passes here at 7:25 and does not stop. Beverly was driving the wagon pulled by two mules and loaded with some three sacks of corn. and two bales of hay, and Edgar was in the"tail"of the wagon into which he had just clamber- j ed, and the crossing is the one at the north end of the plat-; form. The engine struck the wagon at the rear wheels. Bev- j erly was tossed high into the; air and landed somewhere on1 the mules, and escaped with on- j ly a few scratches and a bad : scare. Edgar was hurled between the main track and the station siding. When picked up he appeared lifeless, but un-1 der restoratives he came around J and an examination by ph^'si- ! cians disclosed no serious wounds and unless internally injured he will be all right in afew days. The wagon was wreck-; ed but the mules were not hurt. \ It seems that no blame can be attached to the railroad people, i Mr J Frank Eppes, who was j principal of our school the ses-; sion of 1905?06, and who made a good principal too, is in town spending some days with old friends. He closed his school nt Hampr. S C.. last Friday and will go from here to his home at Due West where he will spend the summer resti n'g and reading law preparatory to entering the Law School of the So. Car. j University next fall. Mr Eppes is very popular here, where he1 is admired as a tirst rate fellow. [ Mr 0 E Wheeler of Florence, i ( was noted in town Saturday. 11 l While here he sold his lots on! Acline avenue East and Lake; Street to Dr M D Nesmith, and , a tract of land of 111 acres at i the Southwest corner of the ! cross roads, just west of Cades,! to Mr W E Nesmith. Mr Jno M Eaddy went to Sum ter Friday to look after a busi ness matter. On his way home he stopped at Timmonsville to see his brother, Dr Albert Ead- j dv, who is just recovering from | an attack of pnuemonia and is ; getting ready for a trip for the benefit of his health. An election was held Thursday to choose a successor to I Warden H L Richey, resigned. The result was the election of j Mr P D Cockfield to fill the un- j ovnirod t#rm I Mr.I L Stuckey spent Friday night and a part of Saturday in Florence on business. Mr and Mrs J T Rollins, of j Ards X Roads, were in town j Sunday with relatives. Young Mr Kelley, son of Dr J Kelley, of the Bethel neighbor ; hood of Florence county, came to our town Saturday last. Mr Kelley intends to enter the Charleston Medical College in October. i A general survey of the crops in this section and north and wesc of here personally made, and information from intelligent and reliable sources, bring us to say that, all the circumstances being taken into account, the prospects are very gratifying. Of course nearly all crops are late, but ahead of us are many, many days of sunshine and moisture ere winter shall close down on us again. Occasionally we need such springs as the one now closing to jerk us up and remind us that we have been, in our eagerness, trying to twist the seasons to suit our notions. To have our attention brought to realize that we can't force nature does us good and in more respects then one. Cotton is generally of good stand, clean, healthy and growing well, j Corn is thriving and getting in t ' o nnrro rri iui a up?i?iu spring. Tobacco transplanted rooted quickly and has moved off evenly and with good body and that appearance that indicates thrift and splendid devel 1 opment symmetrically and with out the blemishes and defects j that cut the last few crops short and turned oat products i inferior quality. In fact, the j present outlook is that the to-' bacco of this year will be a bet-! ter crqp than has been grown j in five or six years. In connection with the crop we make the I assertion that more real work ! has been done in this section I during the four weeks just gone j by that has been done in the j same length of time in several | years. It is rare indeed to see our people with such "a hustle'' on and it is refreshing and encouraging too. W L B The Dispensary Situation.' Attorney General Lyon has ruled that under the Carey-Cothran law Williamsburg county mavj hold an election this year on the liquor question. As a petition containing nearly 900 names has been presented to the supervisor^ the election will probably be called in the near future, provided enough r.ames on the said petition are qualifie 1 voters to comprise one-fouith of the registered voters of the county. Supervisor Singletary will investigate the matter iu a short while and if the petitioners are entitled to it the election will undoubtedly be ordered. Dyspepsia and General Debility are curtd bv P.
