THE HOLIDAY SEASON - ? IN LAKE CITY. GRAPHIC DESCRIPTION OF THE FESTIVE DAY-SANTA CLAOS REMEMBERED OUR CORRESPONDENT. Lake City, January 1:? Christmas passed off qniefly. The day itself was very like a Sunday. Everybody and his wife and children staid at home, toasted before the genial tire, ate turkey and dozed. The shooting of tire works had gone on two weeks before Christmas day arrived and then surfceted, weary of it all, even the noise ol crackers was absent. The children had fruits and toys all the year and the gifts of old Nick came to arms already full and hence were receivetf with dulled pleasure. The accustomed feast was received by sated appetites with only indifferent zest. And thus is Christmas spoiled. Work makes play all the more enjoyable; the sweet- J est sleep is that which follows] weariness; there is no sauce comparable to hunger. After all, pleasures are only relative, and prosperity is hot without | its impedimenta. Mr J F Buck of Chattahoo<sbee, Fla., was in town the early part of the week. He is out on a visit of pleasure and of business. Mr S J Singletary went down to Kingstree Monday night to have the final approval made of liis bond as supervisor. Dr and Mrs J L Bass of Kingstree spent the holidays in town. Dr A II Williams has been ap^ pointed trustee of R T Boston & Sons, bankrupts, of Blossom,] Florence county. Rev and Mrs S J Bethea were * with kith and kin at Latta during the festive week. Rev and Mrs S (' Morris of Grover, S C., are in town having a good time. Cadet Metier Sturgeon took his vacation at home. He is holding a good rating at the Citadel. Mrs J E Brunson and children were in Florence last week. Mr Floyd Rodgers, who is tak, ing the course at tne Medical ; college in Charleston, was here 1 resting from his studies during the holidays. He claims to be visiting his mother and sisters, but they would hardly have known it, had he not told them so, for his time was spent elsewhere. Oh! had this writer but known what was coming from his friends, he would have started '^ out in December on a strict 4 starvation diet, so as to be in . thorough condition for regular gorging. ' Roast turkey came; ! cakes and pies danced in the door; some sent barbecues ' (plural number, great, nice, juicy; plurals); that steadfast , old fellow brought partridges (Holy Allah! may his shadow never grow less); and even the true old negro blessed us with a basket of fresh eggs. Miss Cecil Severance was at heme from Valdosta, Ga, during the annual season of rejoicing. Mr.TP Philips, whose mind has been giving away for several j weeks, was examined last week; by order of Probate Judge Scott i and was adjudged insane. He; was taken to the State Hospital for the Insane Thursday night, by Messrs J H V Gaskins and J Godwin, who were authoriz ed to do this. Mr Philips Is a good man and tirst rate citizen and his misfortune is deeply re- j gretted. W L B. A CHRISTMAS TRAGEDY. Mr. J. P. Nesmitti Burned to Deatb Near Trio -Foul Play Suspected. A A, WW... -jp a well known citizen of this county, Christmas night at Camp No 0 of 1 the Atlantic Coast Lumber Corp., at a point about miles Southwest of Trio, where the camp was stationI ed at that time. * Mr Nesmith was in charge of the saw f?rce at Camp No G and occupied a small, portable shanty near the scene of his avocations. On the da in question -Christmas day--he parted from some friends to whom he had been talking and went 1 to his quarters about 6 o'clock p. m. About an hour later Mr H C Pitmau, I I the foreman of the camp, saw the I shack occupied by Mr Nesmith in flames and hurried to the spot, but when he reached there the walls 1 were falling in and the house was nearly consumed. I When he finally succeeded in enter! ing he found Mr Nesmith lving on the floor burned to death. His head was burned, and also his hands and feet were entirely consumed. In the ashes was found some silver money, several dollars of which were melted together, and there weie several other coins scattered Hbout fbft Hmnnntimr in all to about $10.00. It is said that during the day Mr Nesmith had been seen to count ovei $100 that was in his possession, no trace of which could be found except the coins above mentioned. The relatives of the dead man are ; mclined to suspect foul play and have demanded an investigation by the authorities into the circum1 stances attending the death of their kinsman. ; Mr Nesmith was about 40 years old ! and unmarried. He was originally i from the vicinity of Dock postoffice and has a large family connection. The remains were interred at the , family burying ground on Thursday after his death. Two New Bargains.
