Scranton, Oct. 23.?Mr R B Cannon went to Atlanta a few w days ago on business. Mr Winslow Wright made a business trip to Hartsville one day last week. Mr Hart Hill of Timmonsville spent a few days recently with relatives and friends here. Mr William Kelley and family v have become residents of our town. Mr Kfellej comes here from Cades and we extend a cordial welcome to him and his. He is now occupying the Wall cottage, on the corner of Graham and Church streets. Capt E S Johnson, formerly section master at this place, but whose work at present is near Florence, visited his family here Saturday and Sunday. ^ * - Maggie Eaddy, colored, was arrested here last Thursday for carrying a concealed deadly weapon. She came in town armed ' 1 i 1- - _"U witn a revolver, wmcu was seen by Dr C H Pate, who asked her to give up the pistol. Maggie declined doing so, saying that she was carrying it to protect herself. As Dr Pate is town treasurer he called in Mr R E Cockfield and after a lively tussle they succeeded in disarming the negress. Maggie was fined $10, which she paid, and left on ^ ^ the North bound train for Cowards. Come again, Maggie, and bong along two "guns" next time. Mrs Mitchell of Charleston visited Mrs R B Cannon, her former school-mate, last Sunday, returning home this morning. v A number of the Scranton society young men enjoyed attending a very pleasant dance and pound party last Thursday night at the residence of Mr A P Hutchinson, near Cowards. Mr Troy J Lynch was a visitor \ in town Sunday from Lynch. '"J*. Several from here contemplate taking in the State Fair in Columbia this week. We wish them all a pleasant trip. The plant con* sisted of a large steam saw mill, * gin, grist mill and shingle mill. ;* At nightfall on Thursday the * mill was shut down, the fires i^,* were put out carefully, as usual, Pf and everything closed up for the night. About 3 o'clock next iporning the fire was discovered but all efforts failed to extin: guish the flames or even check 99/ their progress. Everything ex^ Lcept a few pieces of lumber, which were pulled away, wa destroyed. Thirty bales of cot ton in the yard were burned up also a lot a seed. All of the cot ton except three bales belonget to these gentlemen. The loss i about $5,000, certainly not les: than $4,000 at the lowest, ant not a cent of insurance. Th< loss is a serious blow to Messr; Brown Bros, who had to stanc by and see many days' hard hon est toil go up in smoke.
