NEW BRICK MERCANTILE BUILDINGSCHOOL WITHOUT A PRINCIPALVARIOUS MATTERS. L A K K (' I T V , Oct. Miss Olive DuKant went to the ! Columbia Female college last I j week. This is her tirst year at j that institution'of learning. Cadet Metier Sturgeon went j to Charleston Saturday to reMime his place in the Citadel i Academy. i lit- iraminir 01 -N^r ? uow- i -dy's dwelling house. at tile corner of Acline avenue and Valley street, is rapidly .ifoinjf up. One day last week a white man had his storage battery so heavily charged at the "jiower house" that he had to be taken to the vfuard house in a Cotton sheet rolled up in the sheet j and bodily carried. Mr \V K Bowen has contracted for the purchase of one of Mr A 1' Hatchelf's dwelling houses on Charles street. We understand that Mr Bowen and I family are airanjjin^ to move I hereabout the tirst of next year. Mrs L H Jennings (nee Miss | Maria Croft) of Bishopville has donated to the new Methodist church a splendid bell. It has already l>een placed in the tower of the church, which is now building. Mr B \V Stewart is getting ready to build a brick house on his lot on main street. This lot is aoout sixty feet wide and the building will contain, we under istand, throe stores. The exca| vation for the foundations is being dug and sand and brick are being placed on the ground. Again ve say unto thee: "If you get there before I do, Just tell them all I'm coming too." How is this? A man refuses to sell his land at SICiOO an acre, yet when he makes his tax reI turns he swears the same land j is worth only $40 an acre. According to previous 'unjnouncement a meeting of days began at the Baptist church last Sunday. . The pastor is beassisted by Rev J A Brunson of Klloree, Mr C K Timmons has secured the Fulmore residence on Acline avenue and will move his family here irom South R?cky Mount about January first next. Miss Eleida Burns, who is teaching near Mr J M Matthews, spent Saturday and Sunday in town. Last week we stated that a principal for our school had at lact Kapti cprnrpft Mr S K Rar_ ron, of Rock Hill. He wrote the trustees applying for the place and naming the salary he would accept. This letter was answered at once and by wire telling him his offer was accepted. Notwithstanding this, Mr Barron, for some reason, declined to come. So the school is still without a head. Those pupils who are above the sixth grade were sent away, and the two lady teachers are trying to get along v.s best they can with the remaining children. This j is a sad state of affairs. Several { boys and girls who ought to be jat school right here at home j have gone to high schools in this ond other States. Now those children who are so unfortunate as to belong to a grade above the sixth, are sent home, and two voting utiles are lettto struggle with a horde of kids, some good, some bad, and some indifferent. Dr L B Salters. whose coming was announced some weeks ago, is here ard is taking hold of the situation so as to put himself m position to enter fully upon his work. Lake City is growing?not because of encouragements hut in spite of discouragements within, not without. Every expansion is made against opposition. A SCIENTIFIC PUZZLE. The Unsolved Mystery of That Wonderful Entity, Ether. Certainly, though no sane person 1 doubts the existence of the ether, i we are sorely troubled when we are j asked to describe it, for we are almost forced to give it properties in- j ; compatible with one another. Tliia I ! you will see when 1 enumerate all ] the functions which this utterly \ i mysterious entity discharges. It [ convoys the force of gravitation. It j has the power of vibrating from 'side to side, and these vibrations, according as they are last or slow, i have the most varied results it pop us. Tliev all travel along at .e . same speed, which is thai of light? 1 SG,u0u miles a second?but the waves may oscillate from side to | side as they go. either twp or three times a minute (or less) or even a million times a minute (or more). ? When the waves are very slow we call them electric waves. When they i are a little faster we call them i Hertzian wa?vs and telegraph across [oceans with litem. When a little j faster we call them Blondlot rays, i A little faster they are called heat ; rays, or radiant heat. A little faster ! they are called red light, then yelj low, and so on to violet. Then they become invisible again, as they were before, and we call litem ultraviolet light. Then a little faster we rail them 13ecquerel rays, and the fastest we know yet we call Roentgen ravs. I have missed out more than I j have named, and there are many gaps yet to fill, but you will agree with mo that the entity whose vibrations cause electricity, heat, light and Koentgen rays, besides conveying the force of gravitation, must be a very Amarkable substance. And, more tlian that, it is supposed that all ponderable matter is really made out of the ether. By ponderable matter we mean matter which is subject to gravitation and therefore | has weight. The ether itself, which | conveys the gravitation, is conceived of as hoing without weight. It comes to this, then?that in the I ether modern science recognizes the I most profound of all its problems, [except that of consciousness. By | gravitation it makes the universe i one, by its movements it makes the l universe alive, and it is the stuff of ! which the material universe is made. ?('. \V. Saleeby in Harper's Magazine. Not Exactly a Compliment. A medical man humorously relates the following little experience, admitting that he "didn't think it particularly fuuny at the time:" "The driver of a bus on which he had jumped happened to mention the name of one of his patients. "It's a bad job about poor Bill X., ain't it, sir?" "Yes," returned the doctor. "Very serious case. You know him, then?" "Know him?" echoed the driver. "We went to school together. Poor Bill! I shall miss him." "Oh, well, while there's life, there's hope, y' know," said the doeI tor. "Your friend isn't dead yet." "No/' gloomily returned the driver. ''But I 'card as they'd called yon in this morning. Poor Bill!"? Glasgow Times. Poisons That Leave No Trace. The late Sir It. Chris tison, M. D., of Edinburgh, testified at a trial that there existed poisons which left no trace of their work behind. He was about to mention one when the judge stopped him, remarking that such knowledge was not desirable to be bruited abroad. Next morning Sir Robert was besieged with inquiries contained in letters, asking tkn nnmn AI iKo TVAIOATI Tho I AVI liiC naxii^; vi viiu ^/uijvui AMV writers, of course, professed that their interest in the matter was of an entirely scientific nature. Her Dilemma. He?I detest ragtime! She?I hate it! "Then why don't you stop playing it loDg enough for me to tell you that I?why don't you listen ?" "I am listening. Go on." "But I can't go on?to that rag-1 time." "OK, dear! And this ragtime is the only thing that will keep Auut Susan out of the room!" Human Nature. After a long, weary search the in:- i secured work. . I1 "llow do you like your job?" we: inquired at the end of the first week.! "I'd like it pretty well," was the1, replv, "but for one tl ing. "What is that ?"
