S C. _ THURSDAY, SEPT. 21 1905 "Out of the Frying Pan. " Mr W F Clayton, the offensive and defensive self-constituted champion of booze for the Pee Dee section, having, we suppose, killed and eaten all the prohibitiouists in Florence county, sighs for new worlds to conquer. In quest of adventure and to up-hold the red banner of rum, A he mounts his Kusinante aud, armed cap-a-pie with sword and bltiuderbuss, sallies forth into Williamsburg to stab and shoot the poor, defence1 less editor of The Record. Far from the terrific onslaught we anticipated, however, his attack is puerile and pitifully weak. Is his' trusty blade so rusted with the gore of his victims as to disqualify it for cambat? Has his deadly blunderbuss been overcharged with blunders aud busted? We fear our good H knight wore himself out vanquishing his foemen at home. From Mr Clayton's rambling and incoherent argument aud^ .his misuse / of Scripture, we gather that he deems a druukard not worth trying to save by removing liquor from un-, der his nose. How can prayers and ! exhortations avail when there is a State-licensed grog-shop conveniently near and the devil to tempt lam by whisperiug in his ear the same argument that you, Mr Clayton, use: "Drink on! You're a patriotic , citizen. You buy your liquor and the prolits go to educate your childreu." Aud the poor, fatuous fool demonstrates his patriotism and fatherly love by drinking on untii his children are without decent clothing to attend the rum-endowed institutions of learning. No, Mr Claytou, whether you believe it or not, all of these men wo lid not send to North Carolina for liquor if the dispensaiies werej closed. Aud even if but oue indi-; vidual in a county were rescued j from the clutches of whiskey it would be worth the price, for what on earth can be compared in value to a human soul? But the drunkard is an extreme, type. Hon- about the young man who takes an occasional dram? He I can easily stop now, but will he do; so with a dispensary invitingly open every time he goes down town? Then i the school-boy, who is naturally im- j itative, seeing men going 111 and out j of the dispensary day by day -soon- j er or later he will slip around and get a half-pint of whiskey or a but- j tie of wine just to see what it is> like. So you think Williamsburg people need bibles and missionaries?in other words, we, along with the rest of the State, are in the same category with the desperadoes of Breath-; att county,Kentucky, and the moon-' ishiue districts of North Carolina. i If thai be true we are indeed in ^ bad shape and the preachers, being 5i part of us, are heathen too, so who is to reform usy Perhaps you, who are so glib in quoting Scripture, might tuimyour talent to better advantage thlm boosting the dispensary and try 1 ug to fasten on us forever an institution whose influence e, is degrading. If you had a better cause we believe you could make a ' better argument and possibly be. conie the lever of Archimedes to lift j up us poor fallen humanity in Wil- j - : / / liauisburg, preachers and all. You say that prohibition is a ghost. Well, that reminds us of the conundrum, "if the devil were to lose his tall where would he go to get another?'' Answer. "To a dispensary where they retail evil spirits."' So you see your pet is elosoh associated with evil spirits if not with good ghosts. The fact that the dispensary sales are increasing from a half million to a million dollars a year is pretty <ro.nl ..v-i11 .'111. fleit fill- sV-Uelll does V .??%* ..vv v..?v - - -J not restrict the sale of liquor, votir opinion to the contraiy notwithstanding. Von a s s c r t most dogmatically that prohibition would be a failure. The dispensary has had long enough time to work out its destiny. It is no longer an infant industry, '.'lie difference between the two is thai you think that prohibition would not prohibit, while you dare not deny tiiat the dispel^ sarv is eatacombed with fraud, graft and robbery, so that its own "daddy" has charged the State board with being a set of thieves. Now you come to the money feature. That's business. The rest is merely a sort of introduction. Your real argument is from the standpoint of revenue. Do you know how much the public schools in Williamsburg get from the dispensary;" Seventy-four cents per pupil. The people you are so exercised about receive something like eighteen cents per capita. Taxes are higher than before the dispensary system was inaugurated, so where is the real benefit from a monetary standpoint? We agree with you that we are in the frying-pan, being burned to a crisp. Would the tire be worse? May be we shall jump out of your frying-pan and at the same time out of the tire. Nous veirons. It appears that an erroneous impression has gone forth as to the action of the county Cotton Growers' association at its meeting here Saturday. Those who attended this meeting were enthusiastic in their endorsement of the work of the Southern Cotton association and in adopting the resolution making- ten cents the minimum price for cotton it was far from their puipose to disregard the recommendation of the association. As the matter was explained to them it was left largely to their discretion as to what limit they should make and the sole reason why the motion prevailed for ten instead of eleven cents w <s that in view of the fact that there are no ware-houses 111 the county for storing cotton it was thought that a much larger proportion of the farm11 i. . 1?1.1 f..,. f?tl ers coniu auoru to xium uut kji ?.! cents than for eleven. The matter was discussed fully and the motion carried by a vote of more than two to one. The argument of many dispensaryites is about as follows: "I am a prohibitionist at heart but I am going to vote for the dispensary because prohibition won't prohibit and the dispensary don't either, and if we had prohibition there would be blind tigers, which 1 know we have now, and 1 admit there is corruption in the management of the dispensary, but some day the legislature will tix it so that it will be better than it is now and, if we have pro hibition it won't prohibit and then, you know, we get a lot of money from the dispensary that we wouldn't get if it were done away with." Yet they accuse some who intend to vote against the dispensary of hypocrisy. Senator Tillman at Marion: *'I know some of you boys want your little dram and I want you to have it." And the distinguished Senator, lOO. professes to be a prohibitionist at heart!
