MA.Y 25. 1905 J Wonder what would be the result in Williamsburg if the dispensary question were to be voted on? A good many people who honestly believed the dispensary to be the "best solution" are beginning to ponder seriously whether, fter all, there may not be a better solution. Another county?Pickens?has voted to abolish the dispensary by a majority of more than three to one. Is the back-bone of the "great moral institution" goingto be broken one vertebra at a time? And still the long deferred naval engagement hangs tire.' Between Togo and Nebagotoff there ought to be a pretty fair chance of a meeting, to say nothing of Rojestvensky, who the reports say, is suffering from nervous prostration. Unless the signs of the times deceive, the Prohibition candidate for governor, if he be a stalwart, fearless, uncompromising advocate of the cause, will cut quite a considerable figure in the next campaign. Who will be the man? Two candidates for governor on the dispensary platform in. the last campaign?Messrs Ansel and Tal bert? have professed a "change of heart" in favor of prohibition, and both of these gentlemen are recognized as being astute politicians. Nan Patterson, the recital of i whose escapades, as brought out in 1 her recent trial in New York for < the murder of her paramour, Caesar i Young, has furnished a Barmecidal < / feast for prurient minds, is to go on ] the stage and make capital out of < the advertising she has received from ] yellow journals. ' Quick to profit by ' the penchant of mankind for the i bizarre and sensational, the nun- < agers of the Patterson woman have engaged her, it is said, on* the basis 1 of a sliding scale salary. She is to receive $1,800 a week while the facts of her trial are fresh in the public mind, which will be gradually reduced in anticipation of the novelty wealing off when the story of her folly and vice and crime ceases to 1 be a nine days' wonder. And no doubt there wili be thousanJs of fool8 ready to pay to see this i depraved woman make a further , exhibition of herself. Last week in Marion a small boy pointed a weapon at Miss Cletinie Smith, the sixteen-year old daughter of Mr N P Smith, a prominent citizen of that town; the gun Vent off (as they generally do, these unloaded lire arms) and a funeral resulted. Such homicides may be accidental, but at least those who are responsible for them should be put in a place where society will be protected from their carelessness for a term of years at least. There is 110 place on earth better than a newspaper office to learn how many kinds of people there are in the world. Some get huffy jf a statement is sent, others will not pay until they receive a statement. Some will pay without a statement and others won't pay whether a statement is sent or not. Some thought they owed more and some thoughtthev didntoweso much. Some say they couldn't get along without the paper and others say it don 'fl amount to much. But the meanest, set ubbiest in the list, says an exchange, is a man who takes the paper until a bill is sent him for back dues and he is cut off for non payment and then spends all his time explaining how he used to take "the thing" but stopped it because "it wasn't no 'count." An honest man will not read a paper two or three years and as soon as he gets a bill tell the postmaster to mark it "refused."?Pee Dee Advocate. A Case in Point. If in this day and time the proposition that advertising pays needs verification, the fact was pretty fairly demonstrated in the KingstreeScrnnton Pythian excursion last Monday. Seldom or never in these l parts has a similar affair been so J thoroughly and effectively advertis- ^ ed. The committees went to work ' enthusiastically aud intelligently and spared neither pains nor expense to get their enterprise presented to the public, and right w.ll were their efforts rewarded. The night before the day of the excursion the rain fell almost con tinuously and the dawn -was ushered in with intermittent showers. Cold, wet, dreary and disagreeable, the lay looked better suited for almost inything else than a pleasure ex cursion, so that the Knights would] have been willing to call the thing aff by going "fifty dollars in the hole." Yet despite the disastrous weather conditions, the train of six coaches carried about four hundred people and not only did the lodges clear expenses but they actually made a profit of aboat fifty dollars. f Paste this in your hats, ye- penny- * wise croakers who aver that adver-1 tising does not pay. Sometimes, a cough hangs on so long, you feel ag if . othing but dynamite would cuie it. 7.
